Hey guys, in the hunt for a laptop for university only (already have a gaming machine). I can probably go max $800/900 AUD budget-wise. The more money I can save, the better.

Here are the stores to choose from in my area:

www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/technology/laptops
www.dicksmith.com.au/laptops-notebooks/
https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/
http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/laptops

Studying Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Bachelor of IT if that requires certain specs.

Thanks all.

To start off - the selection of machines on those sites is really-really poor, most of them seem be consumer-class with seemingly reasonable specs at low price (i.e. something else - probably reliability, will be lacking).

Wouldn't something like used business-class machine be better? By this time, large businesses will be getting rid of their Lenovo Thinkpad T420/T520-s or even W520-s and they're still very reasonable machines (Sandy Bridge dual core+HT CPUs (or even quad core in W520), up to 2x8GB RAM, SATA3 in hard drive bay and either Intel HD or Nvidia Quadro graphics). Solid modular machines with available components, relatively spill proof keyboards (liquid drainage holes) and some sort of weird alloy skeleton for extra rigidness. Prices are, at least here, very reasonable as well - 200-400 euros depending on exact model, condition and specs.
