Learning to code/program

Has anyone else found it difficult to code? I mean, I was OK with maths. I did it at a high pathway in highschool and passed.
But as far as coding go it boggles my mind. I can do the basic stuff well, but I don't know where to go from there. I look at a script like mine and then ashamans and his looks like some sort of alien technology.

What do you guys think? Share your experiences.

It's always hard when you start learning your first language. Back when I wrote my first scripts, I didn't really understand what I was writing, I just copied and pasted chunks of code from people and got it to compile :p After 30 seconds it would bug out so I'd try and patch it. I kept repeating that until it would run a full loop. After hours, days and weeks of tinkering and trying things out you get the hang of it. I don't think you need to be really good at maths, you just need to understand logic. After a while you get to know the names of functions/procedures off by heart so it's just like writing english.

The best way to learn coding is to actually try random stuff out. The next best way is to go through a python tutorial and apply what you learn there to what ever language you have to use :P

It can be challenging at first, that's for sure. You have to get your mind used to thinking a certain, logical, way and then practice, practice & practice! Persistence is key, it'll come. If you're struggling with some concepts or the like, feel free to PM me and I'll help clear them up. Good luck!

I started my first script last night (Which was a pretty basic B2B script simply using bank presets and pressing a button on which the magic skill was placed) after lurking and reading the tutorials. The helpful people in the IRC taught me loads as I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong.'

This isn't my first time attempting scripting, but SIMBA seems pretty easy so far, it's just a lot of memorization.

I made my first script a few years ago. It was a pretty basic firemaker, but nonetheless, it took me many days to accomplish, I had to keep referring to different code bits.
Sadly, I have not attempted to complete any scripts since then, but I hope to break that habit here!

Is it true that learning Python as the first language is great for getting the hang of programming? Or is it just my opinion? Also, what language is Simba most similar to? Sorry for questions, arrived here just recently.

IMO, the best language to learn first is C++. This is not an easy language. It is not easy to learn it. But, C++ has concepts of lower level programming, higher level programming, and things like memory management. People who master C++ can easily learn pretty much every other language out there because C++ encompasses so many different topics. As a foundation, I believe that having a broad language like C++ is much better than having a more narrow language (like scripting language or a only OOP language).

Also, simba is based off of Pascal (more specifically a flavor of pascal called "pascal script".

Edit: Also, C++ syntax is more "universal". Java, C#, C, JS, PHP, OBJ-C all use very similar syntax to C++, so moving between languages is slightly easier due to that.

I would greatly discourage c++ as your first language. Simply because it is no fun. The language will just take more time to learn and master as for example c# or java. You will have to spend more time creating something in c++ as in a more expresive language.

*BASIC (excluding Visual Basic, and specifically QBASIC) and Pascal were my first languages. QBASIC will either brain-damage you or teach you vital fundamentals that you'll use in every non-esoteric language.

@Atom;, Simba uses a derivative of Pascal named PascalScript. The syntax changes a tad if you're using the Lape interpreter.
Python is easy to learn but not necessarily a good first language.

I'd agree with masterBB; C++ is no fun. If you want to learn a C-like language as your first, go with C# (C Sharp) or Objective C.

Cool, but I'll still use The Mayor's srl tutorial at first. I'll see how much I can understand without learning any language at first, then I'll proceed. Statements such as if, else, etc. already look very similar to me if comparing Simba to others.

I agree looking at a complex script when you have little knowledge can be mind boggling, I think I'm picking up srl quite fast though (about to release my second script and first looping script)..
I probably would have quit srl by now if there wasn't such a large community that helps with scripting queries. I read over both of The Mayors guides before even attempting to write a script - and the way he's written it is perfect for beginners. I'd advise reading the simplistic beginners guide first then move onto the AIO Guide to Rs3 scripting, where you will learn about some cool thing's you can do :)

I find you learn a lot from trial and error also.

Something important to understand, is programming is not maths. Being good at maths does not mean you will be a good programmer. Personally I've found that the people who are best at maths, are worse at programmming.

Programming is a creative activity, which involve good ideas.
