They're building hype on an announcement on FTP set for 8PM GMT - Sunday on their Twitch channel.

This is important. If they decide to make FTP permanent then the game will have a realistic chance to succeed and grow. In fact, if they make FTP a permanent addition without any limitations, then I give OSR one year until it outpaces RS3. My opinion is that Jagex should not be forcing people to pay membership for a game like OSR. People want to have the opportunity to play and get comfortable and see if they like the game before they pay. 2 weeks is certainly not enough. Players should be allowed to play the game freely as long as they would like.

FTP has the power revive pking back from the dead.

Of course they can also announce that they are removing FTP; I wouldn't be surprised. Jagex is capable of such stupidity.

But would they hype an announcement up for them to tell they're removing FTP?

Thoughts?

my thoughts:
ofc they're not building hype in order to tell people they're removing f2p
pking's not dead (w18)
f2p wont result in osrs outpacing rs3 in a year

To see OSRS have 25k MEMBERS online every single day, one can only imagine what the players online total would be if there was an unrestricted FTP base,

Pking is dead until clans come back, and until multi pking returns.

RS3 Seems to be growing as of late.

People are starting to realise that the idea of OSR in the first place only seemed so appealing because of the nostalgia.

I must agree with this - I don't think one game will ever outstrip the other by any measurable amount. OSRS appeals to a certain player base, and RS3 appeals to a different one. Some even play both games.

I think the addition of true f2p to OSRS will bolster the player base (read: amount of bots) by a ton. OSRS gold is still worth far more than the equivalent amount of RS3. Botting OSRS currently requires starting capital for membership fees etc, plus a little extra on the side to account for bans. Remove that, and I think the OSRS botting scene will explode even more than it already is.

Sparc Mac is kind of a skid, but a couple weeks ago he posted a video, the first thirty seconds of which accurately captures the scale & presence of bots in OSRS.

These are members - people paying for the game. Even if they're not, and these accounts are running on the 2-week trial, they'll become members at some point when they've advanced to a level where they can earn profit.

This to me resembles the infamous f2p yew bots. If the p2p OSRS situation is at this level, what will f2p bring?

Holy shit I can't get over how responsive those bots are. They almost all peel off at exactly the same time. Spooky

You can't look at short term up-ticks, here's why:

Long term shows a steep decline for RS3.

Long term shows a gradual increase for OSRS.
Let's look at the obstacles that OSRS has faced and tackled:

1. For a full year, there was no FTP. The old timers who quit during 07-08 were forced to pay membership. Unattractive.
2. You had to start from scratch. That's the main reason why people still play RS3. Imagine having a maxed main and then be forced to start from scratch once again. If it weren't for botting and being able to pay real life cash for GP I wouldn't have switched over. My account is maxed on RS3 with a piss load of quests finished.
3. The game is basically brand new.

A lot of people were saying the exact same thing as you were saying when OSRS first came out, claiming that OSRS is all nostalgia and that it would eventually die following the footsteps of RSC. But I don't see that as the case. OSRS has developed a community of its own and it's pretty evident now. Players are allowed to vote for whatever they please and they don't have Micro-transactions and stupid ass updates shoved down their throats.

That's RSDemon or Aryan. Nothing could ever match their accuracy.

Adding F2P to OSRS would be interesting, many more people would bot, and create bot armies. I believe the disparity between the GP value of OSRS and EOC would begin to shorten due to this.

I heard jagex accounted for this and added a lot of restrictions for f2p, but im not sure if they'll be effective
