Hello. I am right now a new member on this site but was registered on here several years ago when I was into runescape and botting (around the time when OSRS was live RS).
At that time this bot, I believe it was called Simba then, ran pretty well but got stuck sometimes and was always bad with randoms. Is this still the case? Also the scripts I can access right now seem to be very few and most are pretty old. Is this also the case in the "VIP" area (idk what it is called)? Are the scripts there working good or do you have to constantly watch them so they dont make mistakes? Im talking about the RS3 section. Of course im not bashing the scripts here since I know its made and shared by the community for free and that is a really great thing.
I have some experience with c++ and java programming and I maybe could get into scripting on here if everything is updated and working good, is this the case?
The community on here seem to be friendly but it doesnt look to be much activity. Not many new threads and the posts come slowly, I was looking around and most seem to be written atleast 1 month ago and only some topics with a few new posts. I understand its for the best of the forum to value quality over quantity but its hard for us newcomers to stay here when the place looks half dead (no offense). Especially when you have to get postcount up to be able to access the scripts being maintained(?). Its pretty hard to post quality posts and stay on here when you really dont know what this place have to offer and when theres not much discussion going on. How are we supposed to stay on here and post quality posts in the same speed as the forum is moving without having access to what we came for or even knowing if it exists? Its hard to become part of this community because of this without posting shitposts.
Im sorry for the long pointless post but im a bit confused and dont know how to approach these things, so I figured I should ask the community.

We've used Simba for the majority of the community's existence. Simba itself isn't really a bot though, it's just a program. Simba (program) + SRL (include) + SMART (optional "client" thingy) = bot.
The reason it was historically "bad" with random events is because it's (usually) a color bot. It plays the game just like you do - by looking at the screen. Problem is, getting a script to recognize and complete 20+
random events is kind of hard, and not all of the detectors or solvers were always reliable.
You won't need to worry about that anymore - random events were completely removed from RS3, and made optional (right click -> Dismiss) in OSRS.

Prior programming experience will help a lot, afaik the syntax of Pascal (we use a derivative of that language here at SRL) is pretty similiar to most other languages.
"Everything" in this community can encompass a whole lot of stuff. Here's a quick breakdown:
- Simba - the IDE and integrated interpreter. This was recently updated to revision 1100, which is good! Yay!
- SMART - the SMART Mininizing Autoing Resource Thing. This handy-dandy tool is completely optional, but allows you to auto inside a "client" so that Simba won't take over your real mouse.
- SRL-6 (RS3) - the sixth major revision of the SRL include, this is written in Lape and contains routines to interact with RS3 (color, currently at revision 1050)
- SRL-OSR (OSRS) - the official OSRS include, for the time being. Written in PascalScript, but a Lape version is expected to replace it in eventuality (color)
- AeroLib (OSRS) - Flight's include for OSRS, written in Lape. Many users prefer this over SRL-OSR (color).
- PascalScript - Reflection (OSRS) - the unofficial reflection include, written by the reflection team, for OSRS. PascalScript version.
- Lape - Reflection (OSRS) - the unofficial reflection include, written by the reflection team, for OSRS. Lape version.
- Lape - RS3/OSRS include (not completed yet) - An include, written in Lape, that will allow scripts to be written that work cross-game with little/no modification. Pretty sure Olly and slacky are the main devs. It's written in Lape and uses color.
- The scripts - too much variety to be explained. They can utilize any of the above components.
None of the members of that list are currently broken in any way, as far as I know.
(I may be a bit off on some of those, please correct me if that's the case!)

You're right. There's not a terrible amount of activity on the forum. That's because the primary function of this community is to learn, and better our skills through interaction with an environment we're familiar with (RS). A few 99s gained along the way won't hurt either.
SRL doesn't cater to leechers, at all. This scares most of them away. There's a pretty decent selection of public scripts, but if a member joins and doesn't bother to contribute anything, they quickly get frustrated/bored and leave.
We hold a "join to contribute, or don't join at all-" type attitude.
Contribution needn't necessarily be done through scripting or developing - programming simply isn't for everybody. There are plenty of other ways to help the community out.
So, yes, the forum isn't the most active in the RS scene. But that's because there's not a billion leechers constantly rifling through our scripts section, or posting "halp me pl0x!!" threads.
What's posted here is what needs to be posted - to allow those who contribute to contribute more, and benefit from their contribution. It also enables those who aren't contributing yet to ask questions and learn from the older members.
I understand its for the best of the forum to value quality over quantity but its hard for us newcomers to stay here when the place looks half dead (no offense).
SRL can be kind of intimidating to newcomers, but once you jump the mental hurdle of a not-quite-lively exterior, the forum is bursting with activity. A lot of the discussion takes place on Skype or IRC.
Color scripts don't break very often, so scripts might not seem like they're updated (they are). A lot of members here hardly play RS anymore (i.e. myself) and only touch their active scripts when there's a bug that needs fixing.
Especially when you have to get postcount up to be able to access the scripts being maintained(?). Its pretty hard to post quality posts and stay on here when you really dont know what this place have to offer and when theres not much discussion going on. This is a bit of the way into the wrong mindset - the quality posts requirements aren't there to bar you from accessing better scripts, they exist to encourage contribution. If you truly wish to help the community, you won't find it hard to make your required posts (30 of them).
If you're posting for the sake of posting (exception: NOTA), or solely to gain access to higher boards, SRL might not be the place for you.
If, on the other hand, you're motivated and encouraged to remain with the community and become a functional component, staying won't be hard at all.
Don't let any of this intimidate you - we're very welcoming at SRL. We're all working towards the same goal here, so hop on! And remember, you can ask any questions of any members (even me!) just drop us a PM if you're wondering about anything.
