The Big 250m Scripting Competition

Results & Discussion can be found here

Entry is open to:
• Registered users
 • SRL Junior members

Note: SRL Members and above are not eligible

Post on the thread if you would like to enter. Scripts are due on the 10th of November 2014
Prize:
• A total prize pool of 250m RS3 GP and $20usd
 • 1st: 100m; 2nd: 60m; 3rd: 40m; 4th: 30m; 5th: 20m
 • Increased e-peen and respect at the oldest surviving RS botting community
 • Members will look favorably upon you if you ever apply for SRL Member
 • You will get the sought after SRL Competition Cup (only a handful of people have this)

An additional $20usd will be sent to the winner via PayPal. Kindly donated by YoHoJo ($10) and Home ($10). Get amongst it!

I am currently putting up 100m. A big thanks to our donators: BMWxi 50m, Clarity 50m, and Jake 50m. Donations are welcome.
Script Guidelines:
Your script can be anything you like, as long as:
 • It is for RS3
 • It uses SRL6
 • It has a simple progress report
 • It is no more than 250 lines
 • You haven't already released the script

A script that picks cabbages and eats them could literally win this competition and get you 10 months worth of bonds
Not required, but extra marks if you:
• Create and use a SPS map
 • Use the SRL Player Form
 • Create a custom TPA/ATPA function to find something
Marking Criteria:
• Adheres to above guidelines
 • Effort (If you suck at scripting you can still win this - grades will be weighted against current scripting ability)
 • Good use of the SRL6 include
 • Correct code indentation
 • Good use of comments throughout your script
 • Avoiding infinite loops
 • Necessary failsafes
 • Creativity

I will be judging all entries (I may consult SSRL and SRL Members). PM your script to me before the due date. Results will be released within 5 days of the competition closing.
Can you get help:
Yes you can! If you need help with your code, or have any questions, post them in the RS3 help section.

If you are interested in [potentially] making 1m GP per line of code and you don't know how to script, good places to start are these tutorials:

Wow, this will be great! I think it's very important to note to everyone that may be reading this:
 • This is not a difficult task.
 • Members and above cannot apply, and therefore most people that have proven themselves in some manner already are inelligible.
 • Competitions typically have few applicants due to everyone being scared that someone better is also competing. Don't feel this way. If you legitimately try, chances are you will take home one of the prizes (and let's be honest 30m isn't that bad).

Good luck to everyone! Like previous posters have mentioned, this is an awesome opportunity to come out of the woodwork and get some recognition! Or, if you don't script (yet…) there's literally nothing to lose in giving a stab at it: the worst case scenario is you learn more!

I am always thankful for that random day when I decided to stop lurking around and actually learn how this stuff works :)

I like the idea of the line limit, but I feel like it should perhaps be increased slightly to 400-500, especially if people choose to create custom function replacements. Whereas I could do mainscreenfindObj in 1 line, if I chose to write a custom one that would take up a much bigger chunk, and while I would get bonus points for the custom function, the entire script's potential would suffer.

250 lines is firm. You could write a multiplayer multi-city miner and banker with breaks in 250 lines if you knew what you were doing and made use of the SRL6 include.

Nvm, I now properly read that the competition calls for a lot of SRL-6 include use and only custom TPA/ATPA find functions. Agreed then :)

There's nothing stopping you from learning the very minor scripting differences between the two games and includes and entering the competition yourself. ;)

im not sure about this heh, because of the use of SRL player form basically.. My script is 100 lines just with the setup and if you add the custom objectfinder i start the script at 150 lines heh!

it's probably possible anywaay but clearly out of my league lolz.

Something around 350 lines would be waay easier. But whats the competition about if there no real challenge? 250 lines it is :)

I'm a little skeptical too, but if Mayor and others are confident that it's possible, then I'll believe it. I think the real challenge isn't the script idea itself but making it efficient enough to be done in 250 lines. :p

Another question, how will code standards affect the line count requirement? For example, some of us do this:

if (condition) then
DoStuff();

… while others do this:

if (condition) then DoStuff();

I plan to use the full 250 lines if necessary so it's important to know, imo.

It will probably need to be formatted with proper pascal standards, and I assume you would want to use the fomatter.sex to condense everything to as small as possible.

I'm not too worried about 1 line if statements. I don't want to see

if bankScreen.isOpen() then begin writeLn('Bank is open'); depositStuff(); withdrawStuff(); closeBank(); end;

IE: 1 semicolon per line, maximum.

Likewise, I'd assume if you fight so hard to get as many things in as few lines as possible, then you're bound to lose points on standards simply by having ugly code (a good idea to know if your code is ugly is whether you - or anyone else - could read it a year from now and still know what's happening).

Could I enter a script that I started development on previously, but have not completed or released?

The line limit sucks btw, what's the reasoning behind that?

Question, can we pull snippets from previous works? e.g. I generally build off the same script skeleton & custom TPA/ATPA stuff, is that allowed?

Yes, you can use code that you have written in the past as long as it meets the script criteria and you haven't released it previously.

The 250 line limit is there for a number of reasons, one of which is to teach you to make use of the include and avoid an unnecessary custom functions. Do you want to enter? ;)

No thanks. The line limit is a huge put-off for me. I couldn't abide attempting to write something whilst conforming to such a seemingly pointless restriction.

We're using the SRL-6 include, after all. It's a lot bigger than 250 lines.
Using that logic, I could throw all my routines in a separate file, include it in my main script, and it'd be no different.

Anyway, what do I know? Good luck to all that enter, and to the winner: share i tbed.

It's not a pointless restriction, it's the restriction placed for the purpose of competition. If there were no line restriction, or if it were 1000 lines, then we'd all just be writing regular long-ass scripts and there's nothing that makes it a competition in the first place. Go take a look at one of your scripts and actually take a look at how much 250 lines really is. It's nothing to scoff at, you just have to limit your use of custom functions and procedures that make life easier but really do unnecessary things. I don't know how many scripts I've seen from various people that have functions such as "bankOpen" which then just use bankscreen.isOpen to return their variable, it's completely pointless and a waste of space.

Maybe you could take the competition as a way to challenge your knowledge of SRL-6 as opposed to it somehow limiting you and your creativity.

You bring up a good point about includes though, @The Mayor, would a custom include that has some basic procedures like SetupScreen()/etc be allowed? Or would every line of it count towards your script anyway? :p

Quality and efficiency not quantity ;) People write 100 line colour finding functions thinking they are l33t yet mainscreen.findObject achieves the same result.

It usually means avoid things that result in the account getting 'stuck' in one part of the script. This could happen if you have something like this:

repeat
writeln('Waiting for something to appear');
wait(200);
until(findcolor(...));
if the colour never appears (maybe it misclicked something earlier, maybe it's logged out) the script will just keep waiting forever. You want to avoid things like this.

To stop infinite loops it's good to have multiple conditions for things, like this:

repeat
writeln('Waiting for something to appear');
wait(200);
Inc(I); //Increases I by 1
until(findcolor(...) or (I > 9));
where I is an integer. This will loop through until it finds the colour or I is over 9. This means it would wait a maximum of 2 seconds before doing something else.

We consider the following an infinity loop:
While(AtVarrock() = False)do
begin
WalkNorth();
end;

What happens if for somereason walking North made you miss Varrock? Better log out after 10 minutes of walking ;)

stopWath.start();

While(AtVarrock() = False)do
begin
WalkNorth();
if(stopWatch.getTotalTime() > 10 * 60 * 1000) then
Exit;
end;

This is not an infinty loop, though as long as it is able to alch it will continue:
While(true) do
begin
If(Not(GotItems())) then
begin
Bank();
end else If(HighAlch()) then
stopWatch.reset();

If(Not(isLoggedIn()) Or stopWatch.getTotalTime > 5 * 60 * 1000) then
Break;
end;

Just make sure your script cant keep trying to click trees when it is already logged out, or walking circles around lumbridge for hours while looking for falador.

Breaking is not required, but if have have space left then you can add it for sure. You don't need a specific "antiban" procedure, but I don't want to see static waits e.g. wait(1000) or clicking the same pixel every time.

SRL6 is far superior compared to SRL-OSR (based off SRL5 and prior). There is so much repetitive and useless code throughout that include it's not even funny :p The idea is to eventually make the OSR include exactly like SRL6 so it's worth becoming familiar with how it works :)

@The Mayor, how about making it a rule that the 250 line limit means that the script must be 250 lines after being formatted by the Parser extension? That way there's no advantage/disadvantage for personal code-style preferences. I say this because I've eliminated many lines by changing the formatting away from my personal preferences, but it looks ugly as hell to me, even though the formatting would be acceptable to some people but not others.

Just a thought.

Whether or not it's been through the formatter extension, 250 lines is 250 lines. The script you submit should be no more than 250 lines, as per instructions.

i suppose we all ended up doing that lol. Although my code is really, really ugly to read.. even though its properly indented heh, i found that making a properly written, fully functional, antiban + breaking script in 250 is just impossible for me at this time.. spent hours trying to make things small but just couldnt :redface:

masterBB

2014-10-26 16:01:36

Code blocks in front of functions etc are just part of the documentation. I am pretty sure those don't count.

This is a bad comment since it is a syntax explanation comment:
begin // begins the procedure/function
This is a bad comment because the line itself already says what it does:
minimap.clickCompass; // Clicks the compass
Though maybe you want to show explicitly it is a function by adding parenthesisses:
minimap.clickCompass();
With smart variable and function naming, the code should be readable without that many comments.

As masterBB said, you dont need to comment stuff that is obvious. In your code example, you might want to say what your box actually is (as the reader can't tell).

It's still 250m. It just means that I only have to put in 100m instead of 150m ;)

:O I'm just finding about this now??? Darn it, I could use the gp after losing my main and I've been wanting to make a custom object finder for a while. I'm not sure if I can make a script in time but I was wondering if I turned one in on November 10 if it would count if I hadn't already asked for entry into the competition.

If I have to reserve an entry to submit a script then count me in.

Yep there is the point where it gets odd, clicking compas makes it transparent, so if u using sps it clicks again and rotates screen up and down and then clicks again haha 3times everytime same routine could eazily get u banned. Added to move mouse off compass and wait alittle to fix it temporarily and modified minimap include too so now works not so bad 1 click only.

I'd like to enter this competition, sounds like fun. :)

I just want to clarify something. How do you calculate 250 lines? For example:
doThis();doThat();
if isSomethingTrue() then doThis();

These fit on one line, but I wouldn't consider them to be one line of code. I like to use a decent amount of blank lines for spacing, and I may also add some comments. Are they considered as a line each?

I apologize if this question was already answered.

Blank lines count, comments don't. It would make no sense to include comments in the line count because they're there as user documentation, not for the function of the script itself. Whether it be scripting or proper programming commenting is essential, it makes no sense to limit comments because you want to stay within the line count.

Alright, fair enough. Just wonder what a custom TPA/ATPA function is. Is something like findColorsSpiralTolerance acceptable? If not, can you point to one or two functions that are or a tutorial which can shed more light on this matter.

a custom TPA/ATPA find function is sth like this roughly:

UndorakObjectFinder (Color, Tol: integer, Hue, sat : Extended, Mouseovertext: array of string): boolean
var
x, y:integer;
TPA: TPointArray
begin

FindcolorsSpiralTolerance( x, y, TPA, color, tol, (2, hue, sat);

TPA.cluster(10);

{etc etc, you are supposed to do this :),
here you add move mouse functions and
whatever you want to do, so when you call
it in the script you just have to do:
UndorakObjectfinder(color,tol, hue,sat, ['banker']);
instead of doing the same thing on each process you search for a color}
end;

this is a very rough example, since i made it fast and didnt even check it, its just so you get the idea.. You can look at other people's scripts to learn about custom ATPA/TPA functions!

@The Mayor; when you say ATPA/TPA function, it means it can be etiher ATPA or TPA? since i made only TPA function to save lines, it works the same though :)

There's three ways of doing it:

 1. Setting a rule that the script must be no more than 250 lines after being formatted with the Parser extension so that no one has any advantages or disadvantages based on preferred formatting style (suggested but shot down)
 2. Having each contestant count the number of comment lines that they have and giving them the benefit of the doubt
 3. Running each script through a program that removes comment lines but doesn't modify formatting, something that many people here could whip up in 15 minutes

Or if absolutely necessary, Mayor counts each individual comment line and subtracts it from the total lines in order to see whether the script passes 250 lines or not. It's really not that hard, it takes about a minute to count the amount of comment lines in a 250 line script. Judging the scripts is going to take time, so what's another total of ~30 minutes to confirm line counts? ;/

As for the line cap, I was skeptical about 250 lines at first, but I've grown to like it. It's a good number, and 300 lines would be giving just a little bit too much imo now that I've seen what can be done in 250.

I guess this is a fair test of how efficient can you write code and comments. You should only comment on things that NEED commented on, so it's not really that big of an issue of they're factored in.

Comments are a part of documentation, most methods should be commented so that someone reading it can understand at a glance what, how, and why it does what it does; that's just a basic part of programming.

Instead of doing this:

{ ============================================================================ )
Procedure: GaussWait
Description: Waits a period of time normally distributed in the given range
Credit: Incurable, original idea (with better code) by Slacky
( ============================================================================ }
procedure GaussWait(min, max: integer);
begin
wait(gaussRangeInt(min, max));
end;

… I've had to do this this:

procedure GaussWait(min, max: integer); // Waits a period of time normally distributed in the given range
begin
wait(gaussRangeInt(min, max));
end;

The first is better formatted, gives credit where it's due, and is easier for another script writer to read without having to scroll past 80 characters to the right. The second is done purely for the sake of saving lines because "comments count".

Yes comments are an essential part of documentation, but you’re not writing an include! Having a 20 line comment header for something that is self-explanatory is ridiculous.

{------------------------------------------------------------------------------)
@@@@ Function: findBanker: boolean

@@@@ Description: Looks for the banker // // Oh really! I would have never guessed!

(------------------------------------------------------------------------------}
function findBanker(): boolean;
var
t: TTimeMarker; // t is a TTimeMarker // Oh it is! I would have never guessed!
begin

end; // this is an 'end' // sadfaice

You don’t need explain what srl-6 functions do, as those are already documented. You only need to explain something that is ambiguous to the reader, and even then, the comment don’t have to take up any lines.

mouseBox(intToBox(100, 150, 100, 150), MOUSE_RIGHT); // right clicking the top/left area of xx interface

How many lines did that comment take up? Zero, zilch, zip, nada, none ;)

Although I do agree with your point about crediting people, if your code is neat it should be fairly obvious what it does. If something is confusing/ambigious/etc then sure, comment it explaining what it does, but not all functions need comments.

I believe the biggest "pain" for the line limit is that the only guideline is "Have some good standards and also legible code and also less than 251 lines" which is extremely subjective. Perhaps everyone should learn how Mayor codes because that way he'll like their standards more, or perhaps they should use the Parser extension, or perhaps they should follow a tutorial on proper standards.

The problem with those options is that they would all be different line amounts. Maybe Mayor likes to have spacing in his functions (I do in between "segments" of a function), which makes it more lines than a tutorial might require. The parser extension adds new lines in "else" statements, which is a waste of space, but it also makes the script very hard to follow (IMO) because of the lack of spacing anywhere through the functions.

The point is that the people I've talked to are trying to squeeze as many features into the script as possible to get the upper hand in the competition, and having things as subjective as "I'm going to rate you based on how I like your standards" is creating extreme difficulties in how this happens. ie "Well if I use the parser and then make all the else statements on the same lines, it makes the script illegible to Garrett but it will let me add in the playerform, hopefully Mayor reads better than Garrett does".

That doesn't even touch on my other huge problem with the competition ('You will be ranked higher if I think that you aren't as good at scripting') but I could write a whole essay on how terribly that will work out. It's nice in theory but again, implimenting an idea like that adds extreme subjectivity to it that only serves to frustrate the competitors.

Edit:

Since this sounds like I'm complaining I offer a solution to each problem.

1) Require that all scripts are formatted using the parser (except make all else statements on the same line because it doesn't make sense the way parser does it).
2) Mark the scripts based on quality and performance, preferably marked by someone who doesn't even know what script is written by who.

Sorry for short reply, gtg.

A signature competition is subjective. A scripting competition is only a bit subjective. Scripting standards are well defined:
http://www.kaitnieks.com/scar/scriptingsta/

Imagine a small poem competition. The limit is half an A4 paper, of course, using Arial 5pt will give you plenty of room to write tons of stuff. But you will most likely lose the competition: it is not readable, it doesn't look nice and above all it is not short and powerfull like the other entries.

The only thing I'm saying is that if scripting standards are well defined, it should be an explicit requirement that all scripts meet the scripting standards and they should be judged based on how well they meet the official standards. Being a casual bystander through this thread has given me the feel of very vague requirements in standards, which is causing undue stress among the competitors who are trying to maximize line usage without losing points in other areas. The whole point of the competition is to get non-members to script, which will only serve to help the community. Causing any stress over areas which could be more clearly defined is doing a disservice to the competition.

the biggest "pain" for the line limit….my other huge problem with the competition…I could write a whole essay on how terribly that will work out.

Edit:

I'm complaining

This competition was designed to give new users the opportunity and motivation to code. For a large portion of the entrants, this will be the first script they have ever written.

The unspecific ‘laid back’ guidelines are proposed the way they are to foster creativity, independence, and more importantly, problem solving. I’m not going to propose outrageous ‘Olympic standards’ to people that are learning. If there were 5 different criteria for writing a comment, another 3 for where to place the ‘else’ in a conditional statement, another 2 for ‘spaces between lines’ do you think this ‘wall of rules’ would encourage someone who has never scripted before to enter this competition?

If there was no line limit, how many entries would I receive? If the criteria was too strict, how many entries would I receive? If I didn't weight it against current ability (thus not giving everybody an equal opportunity) how many entries would I receive? If you are questioning my ability to mark these appropriately, I have marked thousands of examinations in my time.

This is turning out to be the most successful competition ever to occur here at the Forums. While you are entitled to your opinion, you could have sent it to me via PM. All it’s done is cast a bad light on something which was so positive. You really should think before unleashing your undue criticism.

If I put in this much work, how much are others willing to put in? I don't know and won't know until the competition is over, I can only hope for a golden trophy.

Edit: fixed a letter, it was bugging me.

No, no, no, no, no, no… You REALLY don't have to. Just forget about it, there isn't all the much time and you obviously have had some experience before. There are some really talented people who entered so just don't worry about it.

I'm definitely not trying to have less competition, no sly maneuvers here :p

If you truly believe that you have put in the most amount of work and hours into your project, then you should not be thinking about the others.

I wouldn't say a trophy or prize defines your work ethic, but instead the actual hours and efforts you put into your project should define your work ethic.

Be proud of the time you committed.
Relax, Keep your head up, you still have some time remaining if you haven't submitted it already.

I've been working on mine for at least a couple of hours a day since I posted "I'm in", more lately now that my exams are over… I finished it a week ago, but submitting it early seems like a waste of tweaking time. ;)

Well, I spent over 6 hours just simply running it. Probably about 8 hours running it total, about 98% of the time watching. I couldn't really make a good estimate on how long I worked on it because I got some help and worked on it at home and away from home.

If I had to guess then I would say about all the free time I had within the last 6 days, so I guess… probably well over 24 hours excluding the testing time too. I'm not the fastest worker, I can type fast but that is about it. I was/am really determined to win haha :)

Considering the time I put in, and I already added everything I wanted, there was no reason to hold onto it to tweak it some more. There was about 13 lines and any feature I wanted to add would take more than that. I also had thoroughly tested the bugs and then tested the necessary fixes/failsafes for multiple hours. It is as good as I could get it within the line limit, in my opinion.

Yes, although you can also make a single map image with multiple regions, and create multiple paths. Each path is just a TPointArray, so you can create as many as you want! :)

Yes, for an example of how to I'd suggest looking at Incurable's lodestone unlocker script (assuming it's registered members) because he had to make multiple maps and worked some magic to do it.

As far as I know, you need to manually click the ladder to go up or down it. Then you can add what the dungeon looks like into your sps image and walk around in it.

Submissions for this competition are now closed. A total of fifteen entrants have submitted an entry, for many of whom it's their first script.

I must say that I'm very impressed with the overall quality of these scripts. There is evidence of a lot of effort ;) Many of the entrants easily have the scripting ability required for SRL Membership. Due to the number of entrants (and the 50 page document I have to submit next week!) it will probably take about 2 weeks to finalize and cross-mark the grades. Discussions have already begun in the higher boards :)
