Community project?

I was starting to work on a new script recently. My idea was to do a multi-skill trainer in taverly for new characters. Something that would level a character in a bunch of skills to make them more normal looking. Sort of a remake of Happy Little Runescape for the beginners area.

I thought it might be fun to do it with a few other people since each could work on a different task. So I reached out to a bunch of the active jr members to see if anyone would be interested.

The response was way more than I expected. There's quite a few guys interested. More than just me and a couple of pals collaborating… it should be a community project of sorts. I guess after I figure out what I'm doing I'll open a post in Jr to announce.

I have no clue how to organize or lead something like this. I was the instigator but I don't think I'm the best person to run the project. Is there anyone who thinks this might be up their alley? If so, speak up! I'm trying to get deposed.

Would anyone else be interested in the project? Maybe we could partner up the jr members with someone more experienced who could review their work and help them tighten it up.

A good designer would be helpful so it doesn't end up a total rats nest. I guess Gunner used to be a project manager so he might be able to play a key role in keeping things organized.

Any other thoughts or wisdom on getting things going?

You might want to speak with @Coh3n, who might kill me for even suggesting this. He was amazing at keeping MSI organized and could probably give some good advice on how to stay on track.

Heh I won't kill you. :p But I don't have the time/energy to get involved in a project like this.

The truth is, there were a lot of mistakes made with MSI. I know that now that I've had a few years of school since that project. True, I kept it organized (somewhat), but it could have been done much, much better that would have helps us all in the long run.

For a project like this, you need to seriously plan in out. That means no programming for a while. You want to know what you want to do, then figure out how you want to do it. Come up with a good code design that minimizes repeated code and can be easily tested. Only then would I suggest you start writing code.

Like I said, I don't have the time/energy to get involved with a project like this, but I don't mind answering any questions people may have on group work.

OH, use Git/Subversion. A group project without just will not work.

Good luck, guys. :)

I don't think this will be as big as MSI, being just one town. I think what needs to happen is:

  1. List all the possible activities in Taverley (and burthorpe) that could be included.
  2. Plan how activity info will be stored (needed items, used items, etc).
  3. Plan how switching between these activities will work (based on levels, timers, amount of item obtained, current location etc.).
  4. Write the code to handle activity switching (must be written in such a way that new activities can be added very easily).
  5. Transport between tasks needs to be planned (i.e. some sort of walkToTask('mine') will be useful here, and could make use of both lodestones.
  6. Write the code for each activity.

Here is the start of a list of potential activities (will be useful to sort into p2p and f2p - activity.isMember etc.)

  • Kill cows in pen [+hides +meat, + bones]
  • Kill GAs in the dungeon [+herbs, +charms]
  • Pick flax [+flax]
  • Spin flax [+bowstring, -flax]
  • Catch crayfish easy of flax field [+raw crayfish]
  • Hunt crimson swifts east of cows [+feathers, + meat]
  • Chop trees east of cows [+logs]
  • Light fires [-logs]
  • Cook meat on fire [-meat]
  • Fletch arrow shafts [+arrow shafts, -logs]
  • Fletch short bows [+shortbow, -logs]
  • Fletch headless arrows [+ headless arrow, -arrow shaft, - feathers]
  • Mine in cave [+copper, +tin, +clay]
  • Smelt ore at furnace [+bronze bar, -copper, -tin]
  • Soften clay east of furnace [+soft clay, -clay]
  • Smith on anvil [+arrow head, + bronze armor, -bronze bar]
  • Fletch bronze arrows [+bronze arrows, -headless arrows, -arrow heads]
  • Spin soft clay on potters wheel [+unfired pot, -soft clay]
  • Fire pot in oven [+pot, -unfired pot]
  • Pickpocket pompus merchants east of hunter area
  • Pick wheat in field south of Taverley bank [+wheat]
  • Grind wheat in mill NW of Taverley bank [-wheat, -Pot, + Pot of Flour]
  • Bake Dat Bread Son.

An important thing to keep in mind is that antiban and other similar variables should be similar across all the activities, it would be strange if mouseSpeed changed randomly from 20 to 35 and started behaving differently because the program moved to a different author's work, and then changed back to another, et cetera.

Antiban could simply be a 'global procedure'. In some of my scripts I have antiBan(chance, skill) e.g. antiBan(5000, SKILL_MINING) so it's more likely to hover mining in hover skill.

Thanks for the info, cohen, and it's looking like we're collecting a decent set of members who are willing to perform a somewhat backseat mentoring role to help them out.

I agree with Mayor, the goal here is probably far short of msi but good design will certainly make it better and easier.

I'm psyched. I think I even met my goal of abdicating. I talked to buttdestroyer (yeah, I know, he needs a new name!) and he's interested in taking a lead role in getting this going. He requested the Mayor for a partner to help with core ideas.

He's going to make a skype group and github to have someplace to 'be'. Any other mediums needed for good discussion? I'm a hermit I don't know about these things.

Right, so maybe specify to authors of each activity that they should only ever use "antiban;" and the full procedure/include will just be added to the whole thing later. I'd expect it'd use SRL-6 antiban but I'd suggest adding unique methods for a number of reasons.

New players do not sign up for RuneScape and then randomly start skilling nonstop. I recall being very curious and prone to explore areas as I discovered them. While the objective is to remain in Burthorpe/Taverley, the player should act like a new player within that area, i.e. be "curious." If it sees a random NPC while walking to the bank, have a chance of talking to it. Start some of the quests (but never get around to finishing them). Browse the contents of some stores. Walk around and explore the town for a bit before getting back to the main activity. With a carefully assembled SPS map this shouldn't be that difficult.

While this obviously decreases XP/hour, high XP/hour really isn't the objective here if we're trying to make accounts "look better." It makes more sense for Jagex to see high level skillers grinding out skills to 99 or 120, but that isn't the first thought that comes to a new player on average. I've found new players to play in a much more chill, relaxed manner than the efficiency-crazed crowds of world 48.
