Progressive lifestyle in combination with Villavu?

Hey guys! Lately I'm barely active because I'm pretty busy. I have to go to school, make homework, study for tests, gym, … But then I also want to go out with friends, watch television, relax, play some games, go to bed at a decent hour, … Very little time rests for other things like scripting and this forum. I'm wondering how you guys combine a progressive lifestyle with being active on the field of scripting? Do you script every day a tiny bit or do you do it by making some procedures/functions in a few hours and then wait a few days and repeat until your script is done? I find that hard to believe because whenever I wanted to script I needed some time to warm up.

Basicly i do like 1 good function a week, for simple scripts i do like 15 functions in a week. mostly at the weekends, because in simple days got soo much work to do, sitting like 30mins ar the simba. Actually i dont get any problems jumping straing into scripting, no need for warmup.
For example dragons script tooked me 2months to do, rune mining 1month it was my first script, now 6th day making fruit bat script, basicly its working, just want to add antiban and some fancy stuff like nearly always picking in a chain order around the edges or or something…now on like 9 functions and 350 lines.
There is no such thing as being apart of this forum and making scripts & having a life. Back when I was addicted to scripting a year ago I would script up every 1-3 days for this server called 'Telos' for over a month, each one took me about 1-3 hours to write except for the fighter.

1 good function a week, isn't it kind of frustrating that it takes a while to complete a script? When I'm scripting I want to do as much as I can, then I end up scripting for hours, perhaps even more debugging than scripting.

1-3 hours to write a well functioning script? You must be a master at scripting, my simple redberries gatherer took me days to make.

It's easy, you can pick three out of four:
- Doing something useful at college
- Having a social life, job, etc.
- Scripting
- Sleep

It is
very hard to maintain a reasonable level of activity on these forums when you have other commitments, especially if you’re studying or working. It can also go the other way though, it can be hard to keep up with all the other stuff in your life if you spend too much time on the forums (and it’s pretty easy to get addicted, particularly if you are scripting). Over the last few months I’ve been focusing more on SRL and just doing the bare minimum to get by in the other aspects of my life (studying, working, family etc.). I’m always very wary of getting addicted to SRL and scripting as it can really effect the other aspects of your life (one of the reasons I took a
5 month break from SRL last year). Once I’ve finished this project I’m working on my activity will drop a wee bit so I can go back to real life.

So long as you prioritise RL over SRL (lol), you should be fine. I understand your frustration with balancing scripting (an enjoyable hobby) with more important tasks like work, education, and friends, but you have to prioritise what really matters in the long run over what doesn't. Note that I'm not suggesting that scripting is a total waste of time, but it's not something that you should prioritise over what's actually going to matter in the long run. This community is awesome, and scripting is a lot of fun, but what's more important right now: that you get your assignment done by Friday, or that your script will run for a few more hours before failing while you're asleep?
That's just an example, obviously, but I think it's the easiest way to think about it.
EDIT: And to answer your question a little more directly, I script for a few hours a day, mostly late at night before bed. If you set aside time for yourself for entertainment (watching movies, playing games, etc), you can always use that for scripting instead if you do find it enjoyable.

Once the fighter was written I could use the functions from it for pretty much the whole server

Yeah, its really hard, between uni, Gym, rugby and GF i have almost no time, but i try to atleast enter srl forums every day once or twice, and maybe i get to script on fridays/saturdays. Its really hard to balance because scripting is so addicting and gives a lot of satisfaction, and besides, at least when i script.. 5 hours pass reeeeeally fast haha so i progress really slowly.. maybe 1 script per 2 weeks, "time flies when u having fun". So.. i dont do progressive work, like 1 function a day.. i do no scripting for 6 days, 5 hours of scripting 1 day, all in a chunk. Cause i am like you.. i need some warmup, i cant do 30 mins of scripting each day.

What I like to do is plan time to sit down and work on a script, but I understand where you're coming from because working my job makes it very hard to find time.
Scripting has brought joy to my life so it's worth making time for. :)

time management bro
8 hours sleep
2-8 hours of classes (depending on whether ur in highschool or college; sounds like ur in highschool?)
1-2 hours homework
1 hour gym
those are the things u have to do regardless. so then u have 5-12 hours to do whatever you want with ur time, depending on how long ur classes take and how much homework you have.
u can spend those 5-12 hours chilling with people, or scripting, or a combo, or jack off. whatever u want

Gotta say, taking engineering in uni took at least those 5 hours extra that I had during my day and usually ate into my sleep time (and gym time but I made up for it by playing hockey every weekend, right?) That's why I wasn't active basically at all for the last 4 years.
Now, I have a job so I basically plan to spend some of my free time scripting. It ends up being maybe one or two evenings per week. The rest of the time I just consider stuff during downtime at work and write down great ideas ;). I've been working multiple weeks on a single script, and it's only been a solid day or two per week, depending on downtime. I enjoy writing the script and problem solving in a completely different way from engineering (of the chemical variety) so it's good to schedule it in every now and then.

When I wrote my first script last week, I was working 8-6 and I did my scripting during the night and would only get 2-5 hours of sleep before work, I finished the script on Saturday morning, but I still tweak it everyday (10-30 mins) to make it more efficient.
tl;dr sleeping is for casuals

I used to do it like this:
School, Work, Homework, Gym, Dance, Sleep. If I had spare time and nothing else to do, I'd write a couple hundred lines of code and then forget about it for days at a time.
If I had lots of homework, I'd spent 48 hours straight completing everything for the entire week.. Then while everyone else is doing homework or w/e.. I'm out relaxing.
Saturday, Monday, Wednesdays were my homework days where I'd do almost all of it on either one of those days and sometimes go over into the day after.
There was a time where I did 3 weeks work of Mech. Eng. assignments and saved them on my USB. Took me Friday, Sat, Sun in a row. Then I somehow lost that USB or forgot it in one class.. Man was that the worst month ever.
During some lectures I used to do the homework there if the lecture was boring or useless.
It's about balance and getting the annoying stuff out of the way first. That's the way it worked for me. If I did the fun stuff first, I'd NEVER ever get around to doing anything else. I'd feel worn out or tired or just lazy as hell.

So you guys basically say that I just need to balance everything. All the replies here are definitely interesting, I'm happy that I'm not the only one struggling with finding time for everything. I usually visit Villavu every day to have a quick look at new content. Don't expect me to be very active for the coming time but sooner or later I'll try to be back in business as I was in August because this is probably the most awesome community of the internet.

Time management can basically be applied to everything in life, and if you want to be organised and productive, you should apply it anyway. Figure out what needs to be done, allocate sufficient time to do it, and then allocate time for everything else. Don't get hung up on scheduling everything ("I've watched TV for exactly 30 minutes, time to eat for 15 minutes and then brush my teeth for 2!" :p), but manage your time wisely and you'll be amazed at what you can get done in a day.

I just go with the flow. Whenever I feel the need to script, I'll sit down and do some hardcore scripting for some hours. Often there's a lot of built up ideas that are just ready to be written down as quickly as possible, then there's the other ideas that needs time to grow. Go with the flow, see what life brings you.

Well, that's the problem. If I want to do some scripting I usually need a few hours, but it's hard to find time for some hardcore scripting. Time flies when you're getting satisfaction from your working procedures and functions. :)

The solution for you is simple:
- "Watch television, relax, play some games"
+ "Chill with some programming"
This is the simplest way / and maybe the only real way for you to get to do some real programming done without removing what seems to be important to you (school + social life + gym).
And there are weekends, they can be used to program 2 days straight no sleep. That's what I usually do when I am "employed", which works fine.

2 days straight hardcore programming, you could visit me in the hospital if I would ever try that. :p

Ironically one of the most useful courses I took in college was a time management class. Being able to properly manage your time (and therefore your stress) is critical in life and it only gets worse as you get older.
So to answer your question, proper time management will help you accomplish any number of things in a day. Within reason of course.

My pleasure! My suggestion is to google "168 Hours Assignment" and do it, you'll learn a lot about how to better structure your days! And no, it doesn't take 168 hours, its actually pretty quick :)

If you have the time to post on here and look for replies than you have the time to better your time management. And the thing is, if you do, you'll find instead of spending your time bettering yourself, your actually spending your time doing SO MANY more things.
I was late submitting that assignment in college. My eyes were opened when my prof said "You realize you're handing in a time management assignment…late?"
