not impressed, I don't see anything new with it other than the fact that you can get it bigger now

Are people really paying $200 for an extra 112 GB of space in 2014? $200 can get you like a 5 TB external hard drive or a 128 GB mini SD card (and an extra $100). Oh wait, I forgot the iPhone has no card slot.

Yeah, and its reeeally bigger… i mean, what most of the people i know said was this "i dont like galaxy´s because they are huge! i love iphone is still small" thats it with that argument lol.

It has no significant change whatsoever, and its really expensive $$$

This actually is my argument. I still use my iPhone 4.. The plain old 4. Just need something that fits in my pocket and can send a message and receive a call.. I don't care much for the apps anymore or all the "features" :l I'm not a big fan of androids; but I'm not a big fan of iphones either.

I think most people shed the money for the OS. What OP posted looks like incomplete specs. There's no CPU and no Ram values.

If you like the size then go with a "mini" android-based phone. I have the Motorola Droid Mini and it has powerful hardware with small form factor, plus it wasn't expensive. You can vanilla android them quite easily, if you don't like the Motorola "bloat".

I have a Motorola Defy. It doesn't have that powerful hardware but it does everything I need it to do. It was sort of slow after a while on 2.2.0 but I flashed cyanogenmod 10.2 by Quarx so it now has android 4.3.1. It's much faster now.

All iProducts are overpriced crap, imo. You pay for the brandname and the "hip" factor. Nothing more.

Personally, I'm a massive fan of HTC, they're easily one of the best smart phone companies on the market due to years of experience, decent prices, regular screen sizes, solid hardware, and great customer support.

I've seen Galaxy's and iPhones break in a month or be plagued by problems. My old HTC Desire and Velocity are both still going strong, and the HTC One XL I'm currently using has never had an issue.

"The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus both have the new Apple A8 system-on-a-chip inside. This 64-bit chipset is has 2 billion transistors inside, up from 1 billion in the A7, and the A8 is 13% smaller than the A7 chip. Apple says this all adds up to 25% faster CPU performance and up to 50% faster graphics performance when compared with the 5s. The A8 is also promised to be 50% more energy efficient than the A7."

It has 2 GB RAM i believe, but batery still sucks with 1800 mAh, while GALAXYs have way more :spot::spot::spot:.

This is what i understood from a quick read somewhere.. not sure about what im saying though!

yes it is, if you are referring to the camera. If you are talking about the phone in general, it has retina display which is the same thing (or better from my understanding).
  • "iPhone 6 features a 4.7-inch display with a 1334×750 resolution, density of 326 pixels-per-inch. More than 1 million pixels are spaced across the display, which is 38% more pixels than the iPhone 5s display."
  • "The iPhone 6 Plus has a larger 5.5-inch display with a 1920×1080 resolution and density of 401 pixels-per inch. That’s more than 2 million pixels in total and 185% more pixels than iPhone 5s."

So.. it's like an iPhone 5s but sixier? :l

It has more performance but iOS 8 also takes up way more resources. I expect it to be dead even with the OS upgrade.

If I were to get it, I'd wait on an actual tear down to figure out the amount of RAM. But meh, it's too overhyped and the apple store won't see me any time soon.

RIP to my i4 though.. can't upgrade the OS any further.

Let me say this, if you're comparing the iPhone 6 to previous iPhone models you're really only appealing to current iPhone owners who are considering upgrading or not. If you compare the iPhone 6 to the other flagship smart phones in the world the argument will be over before it begins. As Brandon said above, the iPhone's advantage is is operating system but even that is falling behind new versions of alternatives, like Android KitKat and Windows 8 OS. And when it comes to the physical specifications of the iPhone, it's really a joke. Everything about the phone is years behind in technology and as history as shown, it will never catch up to everyone else. It will always be out-performed substantially.

If you're looking for a small smart phone I'd look into Sony or HTC. Really nice specifications, I assume they're not so expensive (I'm pretty far behind in US prices), and you'll be making the (radical) upgrade to Android. What I personally have is a clone of the HTC Butterfly but actually has some better specifications than the original. When it was first released over a year ago I paid a bit over $200 for it. I've no reason to change and I would only change it for a OnePlus One.

Sorry if I'm offending any fellow SRL'ers who are also iPhone fans. Keep in mind it's all just in my own opinion. Just logically I can't understand why one would purposefully choose to use an iPhone over an Android phone. My only conclusion is they simply know very little about smart phones in general, are uninformed about Android, or simply are limited by whatever network they're using (no Android phones can be used with their provider).

All retina display means is 326ppi for small devices. Almost all of the other latest devices have well over 400ppi. You can argue that that many ppi is overkill, but it is still much better than the iphone's retina display. It's just another gimmicky name to make it sound better than it is.

As for the phone itself, I honestly can't see why anyone would buy it. There is literally not one thing that is any better than the latest (and cheaper) nexus, xperia, htc, galaxy, or motorola.

And I know this is missing some of the facts, but I found it pretty funny… http://i.imgur.com/Vge3M7S.jpg

What changes at the iPhone 6 plus it's only the optical image stabilizer and a bigger screen of 5.5 inches.

It does technically say "extra money for a handful of "upgrades"".

Yes they can charge more for extra materials, but everything Apple makes (IMO) is overpriced. The money is spent on a percieved better OS (not justified by better hardware that's for sure) but it seems like Apple is falling back into the average category for that now too, so I don't really know what justifies paying more for an iPhone anymore. Just user preference and brand loyalty I suppose.

This is pretty much why most people choose iPhones, you don't have to know what you want to set it up. With an iPhone you can take it out of the box and its already set up and easy to use. Android, so many choices its IMO overwhelming. I like simple, nice looking, matching, things. Apparently many other people do too.

Pretty sure the last time I flashed my android and seen the stock install, it had maybe 3 setup questions…
Language, Wifi, and Google Account (Which would ask about keeping backup of data that was just a simple checkbox)

Last time I handled a iPhone it had

The problems you listed don't make sense or could be easily fixed. I assume you used a stock ROM and didn't customize anything to how you like it. The great thing about android is the ability to customize anything you want. If you want a stock phone with everything simple and impossible to screw up, then apple is a great option. But I don't think that makes apple better. It's just what you prefer.

Agreed, but even then it takes about 15 minutes max to do some basic customisation on an Android phone and never have to change it again. Android isn't complex and confusing, it asks you to set it up how you want it and then never touch it again unless you decide to make a change. I'll never understand why people are so convinced that iOS is "simple" and "user-friendly". There's nothing user-friendly about dumping everything onto one screen and saying "good luck finding the one app you actually want, sucker!"

I'm gonna be THAT guy.

I prefer Android over iOS, mainly BECAUSE of it's variety of choices. With it, you can customize everything you have to make it YOUR phone, not just a stock phone that looks like 99% of other people's phones. It's neat to see new designs and some of the ROMS can do this, that, blah blah. In short, Android just gives you more power over what you own, while Apple makes you use what they've given you and nothing else.

People call it user-friendly mainly because there's not that many things to do. Can't change loaders, can't change icon looks with icon packs, can't change lock screen layout (widget locker y'alls), etc. With iOS, it's just "here ya go, use this". With Android, it's "here ya go, do whatever you want. If you screw up, tough luck". Still, it means that there's people who use tutorials that spoonfeed you to the maximum and still dun goof.

The thing is though, it's impossible to screw a phone up unless you do some serious modification to it. Simply keeping the OS as standard and doing the basic customisation allowed in the "personalise" menus is incredibly easy.

I think most people shed the money for the OS. What OP posted looks like incomplete specs. There's no CPU and no Ram values.

I know plenty of people that really like a phone to have a 4" screen. But all Android manufactures seem to be moving to bigger screens.. and they are not bringing out phones with smaller screens anymore!

The 'mini' smartphones are ridiculous, you pay too much for the specs and still get a somewhat big screen.. The only one that did well is Sony with the Xperia Z1 Compact (4.3" 720p screen, Snapdragon 800). But the new Z3 Compact has a 4.6" screen. They did make the bezels smaller though, so it's pretty much the same size.

But it does make it harder to control with one hand. I can just barely control a 4.7" screen with one hand. Some people decide to go with an iPhone instead, just to get a smaller smartphone with good specs.

The Moto G was alright with a 4.5" screen. But the new version has a 5" screen… bad choice IMO. A friend of mine waited for the upgrade and won't be getting it anymore because he wants a screen <= 4.5 inches.

If I was a phone manufacturer I'd make the following:
4.3" 720p screen
Hardware buttons
Small bezels
8MP rear camera, 5MP front camera
Snapdragon 605
1GB RAM
Near stock Android
2000+ mAh battery
Using aluminium, <= 9mm thin

Sell it for 350$. Know plenty of people that would buy it or even switch from their old iPhone to it.

Well I can control my HTC One (4.7" screen) one handed as well without too many problems. But it would be easier on a smaller screen I guess. But things would also be smaller so in the end I don't really know. I could live with a larger screen :bart:

Apple hasn't really had anything going for it since Steve Jobs. I disagree with @Brandon;. Sure It was a easy to use OS and really innovative back in the day of iOS4-5. But they just add more and more android features with every update. sure the customer Support is good, but if you pay top dollar for a premium phone with pretty bad specs for money to what you can actually get you'd at least want decent customer support. Don't even get me started on the cost to repair iPhones. It seems to me that Apple really have taken a back seat to innovation.

I pay for the ecosystem, the tie ins and the ease of use. As computer users we are definitely more educated in tech and software, but I still prefer to use my apple products. Their materials is a lot better too vs plastic and support is there with physical stores.

What do you mean by ecosystem?

And who said Android is plastic? all my Android phones have been metal. HTC Desire HD + HTC One M7. The M7 won the award for the best looking phone. It is also a better build quality imo. Im also sure i'll be getting the M9 when it comes out next year.

With android you can never really have an outdated operating system.

@Kasi; but why do you think they're adding android features? All the "android features" was added to Cydia long before android was even close.

The difference is that android made them official first. But my jailbroken phone had it all before android. Have you seen the iOS dBar themes for the first iPhones?

Nothing was new with Steve jobs around either. He just had a better marketing pitch. Siri could work fine on a regular 4 but they restricted it to 4S+.

If the phones weren't able to be sold at such a high price, they'd have lowered it by now. People still buy them though. If it's not for the specs like you said, then it has to be for the OS or size?

I'm agreeing with JJ. Too many big phones now.

I don't know much about cydia, but i highly doubt that it had it all. If you're saying they had notification bars first fair enough ill take your word for it. but whenever i watch apples wwdc, i always see stuff that android has had that's been re branded and re labeled. Take NFC for example; sure Android devices didn't come up with the technology. But how much traction did NFC technology gain 1-2 years ago when many android devices started using it? now Apple renamed it 'Apple Pay' its suddenly the next big thing. the best thing apple have done in these past two years is the 64bit stuff imo.

Secondly, not at all, if you worked on a Windows machine all your life, would you be reluctant to go work on a mac/linux for the next couple month? (If you code in Netbeans, would you enjoy working on Eclipse as much? ;)) Don't get me wrong but apple were good. But people get Apple devices cause their friends have them / they've integrated into society alot better than Android and people are just used to them. Partially because of the easy interface (might be worth pointing out easy to use != better). There are a few other reasons why people still get iPhones but i think I've made my point. Apple make money with ridiculous overpriced gadgets. they are a business, why would they wanna lower the cost? if they can get people to buy a device at a higher price, they will sell it at a higher price.

I agree to a point. Hardware-wise, apple is pretty much copying from Android because not even a jailbreak can do that. Though there were 3rd party extensions but that's out of the question.

Software wise, a LOT of android things were copied from Cydia.. Freeing memory was done via SBSettings which existed long before android came out. IOS copied the notification bar drop down bar from Android. Nevertheless, a drop down bar had already existed in Cydia. It just didn't look as nice and had round corners and a non-transparent background. iOS copied from Nokia, LG, Symbian, Windows, Android.. all throughout the years but who was first?

If apple was allowed to patent pinch to zoom, android would be screwed. If blackberry patented buttons to zoom in the web (as done in the first android), android would be screwed. It is true that android had multiple tab browsers before iOS but it's not true that iOS copied it from them.. Internet Explorer had that ages before google chrome even existed. Voice notification existed in AOL ("You've got mail") long before any of the devices could even dream of being on the market.

Let's go through android history.

Look at android 1.0: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/06/building-android-a-40000-word-history-of-googles-mobile-os/6/

It was crap when compared to iPhone 2G (the very first iPhone). Hardware buttons were needed to navigate.. Until Eclaire came out: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/06/building-android-a-40000-word-history-of-googles-mobile-os/11/

where it finally had touch buttons to answer a phone call (October 26th 2009). The iPhone already had that since 2007.

Here's SBSettings notification/drop down:

Yeah it looks like crap but iOS still had it first. Nothing was official and could only be done through a "jailbreak".. That's why Geohot sold the first one for a car: http://www.wired.com/2007/08/geohot-trades-h/

and that's just the very first jailbroken iPhone..

Now the war starts.. Both phones released at the same time and Steve Jobs wants to "destroy android with his last dying breath": http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/06/building-android-a-40000-word-history-of-googles-mobile-os/13/

Android finally gets "pinch to zoom" in 2.1. I don't think I need to say this again.. but just in case: "iOS had it first".

Here's another: "The Nexus One, though, was the first slate-style Android flagship without a keyboard, which gave the device the same form factor as the iPhone".

Before Froyo came out (May 2010), the following themes (dBar & others) were created (December 2009 - January 2010).. Some were probably inspired by android (parts of 2.1) but don't forget Winterboard existed long before android and iOS had a lot of themes that made android what it looks like now. I believe iOS started "stealing" from it's own jailbreak community first and actually started stealing from android since iPhone 3gs/4+. I think some of the below "weather" parts (not sure [possibly taken from 2.1].. these use XML to position the "widgets/buttons/icons") were taken from android but these are on the home screen AND lock screen.

Why would they be allowed to do that? They didn't invent it. Why don't you also say:
"If android was allowed to patent pinch to zoom, apple would be screwed." because that statement is equally true.

Also as you have pointed out, cydia had a lot of things before android did. This doesn't mean android stole from apple, it means android stole from cydia.

Not sure if you understand how patents work :S. Why wouldn't they be allowed to patent it? It is actually their design.

Who had it FIRST? Android did not. So why exactly would they be allowed to patent it? http://www.phonearena.com/news/USPTO-gets-one-right-Rejects-Apples-pinch-to-zoom-patent-claim_id45824

You see that? It was filed in 2007; before the iPhone 2g was even released (patents are filed before products are released). Android didn't even exist back then.

So explain why exactly would apple be screwed and not android when they were the first to have it? It is actually patented by Apple but they cannot make any claims on it on the android devices. I'm not sure why. It's as though the patent never existed.

Copying from another "device" is the argument. It doesn't matter which store you stole it from. Apple is stealing from a store on their own device. Android is stealing from a store that didn't exist for them but I guess you are technically right. From "Cydia".

I'm not saying that android could, I'm saying that android could as much as apple could. If neither of them can patent something it doesn't make sense to say "well what if…" for one case but not the other.

-_- It is patented by Apple. It's their technology. I guess I phrased my statements wrong. I said it "isn't" because they weren't allowed to make claims on the patent. All the claims for it thus far has always been rejected. Think of it this way. You patent some technology you created. Other companies use that tech but you aren't allowed to make claims on it (or they are rejected). There's no compensation for you in that case. It's almost as if your patent never existed.

Apple was awarded the patent successfully in 2007 but since then, all claims on it have been rejected. And I agree that it's pretty stupid they'd be allowed to patent something such as "pinch to zoom" but they do have the rights to it currently. Suing for a $1 billion is a lot.

In either case.. Android still copied it from them. It's their rights; not Google's. Btw.. I like android. Just saying that Google copied first.

Ah, sorry about that. I misread it as the patent was rejected not the patent claim.

@Brandon; All what you have said is pretty true but apple might not have stole as much from android talking from software but the iPhone wasn't solely apple's design, take the swipe to unlock feature, that was copied, apple even got it patented. I just feel that when apple steals something they're more unjust about it, sorta just wants to make you hate em.

Copied from who though? The iPhone 2g had swipe to unlock and this is before android's existence (although Google's CEO was on the Apple board of directors).

July 3rd 2007 from the Engadget Archives:

Hardware: http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphone-review-part-1-hardware-interface-keyboard/
Software: http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphone-review-part-2-phone-mail-safari-ipod/
Apps/Settings: http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/iphone-review-part-3-apps-and-settings-camera-itunes-wrapup/

Slide to Unlock is on the "Software" Review near the very bottom of the page. They didn't patent it (I think). They just patented their "gesture recognition" stuff. So I'm not sure that they actually stole that, since they did had it first. If they did steal it, it had to have been from somewhere and before 2007. I believe Motorola worked with them to create the iPhone.

Yeah.. when they do steal, the whole world knows but no one ever realises what gets stolen from them. They tend to make a big deal out of every little "feature" and "thing" they come out with or stole and patent it right away. Maybe that's why.

Still.. no one ever recognises what they didn't steal and who came up with the idea/software/features first. Now they just sell old hardware for way over market price. But back then was different.. Still over-priced.. but different.

@Brandon; I watched some hour long documentary on the swipe to unlock thing but i cant actually remember what it was called. The idea came from some really old computer but it was first patented 3 years before Apple by a company called Neonode, however the company chose not to pursue Apple, (the patents both exist and are both pretty much identical). Nevertheless, I have always said Apple were innovative in the time of Steve Jobs. Right now, iPhones aren't too interesting. the last greatest phone they had was the 4th generation.

That's sort of surprising considering the availability of touchscreen computers that can run runescape. They're not that common yet but they're certainly here. Surface Pro 3 even has relatively good specs. :)

The iPhone 6 regular is 4.7" while the Galaxy S5 is 5.1"
iPhone 6+ is 5.5" while the Note 3 is 5.7"
Not THAT big of a difference. Mainly the width counted for the bigger screen size for android phones that Apple didn't change until the 6+.
