Thoughts about public scripts and Jr members

This came from reading some random script request thread.

I would like to discourage people from posting money making scripts in the public section. I think free scripts should more concerned with xp/leveling.

It just brings heat on us when a bunch of non-contributors start cranking out GE sales and doing other things that jagex mods are focused on. It's kind of sad but I like when it's hard for a new person to get productive. Catch-22.

I think, in general, we should have a tone of discouraging farming. Don't get me wrong, I love Gunner as much as the next guy! But we benefit if Jagex sees us as a bunch of dorks messing around instead of an enemy trying to ruin their game.

In my opinion we should make JR member a magical rank. There seems to be agreement the current jr logic is too lenient. What if a member had to nominate a new person for jr rank? Like the member process but no app. Someone has to white-knight you.

Then jr would be worth a lot more. Decent scripts could be put at this level. I know, they could be put at members now, but we've seen that member only scripts don't get much attention. Older members tend to shun running anyone else's stuff!

Really, the true juniors tend to be a smaller group of the most active people. I'm not going to throw names because I'll forget people but it's obvious who the current batch of up and comers are.

Your thoughts?

People in general don't really post massive money making scripts in the public section, but I do agree we should not be focused on farming gp.

The only real problem I see with "white knighting" people is activity from our upper staff members who would be unwillingly forced into moderating everything, maybe we could let them get in automatically like normal but we could white knight them into the srl members script section (Lets be honest, nobody uses it currently)

What I'd like to see is some sort of inspection on registered members who then fulfill the junior requirements, because I am very, very tired of seeing registered members obviously spamming to 30 with silly posts like "cool, thanks" on a script thread or "interesting" on a discussion thread.

There are some juniors who are wonderful, helpful, and skilled, but also those who are essentially ranked leechers.

Also, the goldfarming versus dorks logic is very sound, I generally don't even goldfarm but if I made a script I wanted to release I would post it members+

These days gold farming and botting go hand in hand. Yes people used to gold farm a wee bit, but it was mostly about gaining XP, or making a bit of GP for your main. I've always been about posting gold farming stuff in the higher boards, so I think that is a good idea. I do think it's good to let leechers know there might be gold farming scripts in the higher boards to give them something to aim for (i.e., display in sigs). The junior section is probably more active now than it has ever been, and that's most likely because junior members are the bulk of the active user-base.

There are going to be 'leechers' in every tier of the forum. I've seen quite a few old SRL Members login regularly and browse script threads but don't post anything. If you guys are worried about too many people having access to gold farming scripts, then you could start posting them in Members+. Only problem is there won't be a lot of activity. Unless it's an amazing method (2m+/h flawless), or you care about how many people use it, then I'd just throw it in juniors.

I think that will increase the workload of staff. The easiest solution would be if you see someone clearly spamming for 30 posts, then report one of them. I think that the junior requirements are OK. 1 month is a long time to hang around a forum, and 30 posts is equivalent to 1 post each day of that month. JR shouldn't be the 'magical rank', that should be SRL Members.

Just fyi, this dicussion has been here every few months for the past eight year and it always ends up with something like jr. members being reinstated, community slowing down, it being removed, community becoming more active etc etc. Just a cirlce.
For juniors spamming, there is the "spamming into jr. members" offence which gives an automatic 14-day ban and can let active mods remove post count. Afaik every SSRL+ member should be able to hand out infractions.

Oh, interesting. Cool then, ignore my previous post I'll just use that! Agreed Mayor, no need for extra work if this offense exists.

No there's not an infraction (for SSRL) available, There's a spamming infraction which gives 1 point which is useless since it most likely wont prevent them, and then there's the spam bot with is perm ban.

It used to be there like at least 4 years ago. Excuse me for being a bit out of the loop!

I guess you could just do them for one of the other unrelated 3 point offences if you need to.

I think it might of been lost with the server reinstalled
@core; Can you please add a "Spamming - Jr Member" infraction that will suspend the user for 14-days?

Olly

2014-09-16 19:48:25

Honestly, 14 days might be too overkill? a 3 day would be fine.

I was just going off what Markus said, I guess it's up to the staff/admin team to decide.

But does suspension even matter at all? That just means they wait 3 days before they still are able to reap the rewards from spamming.

If you see a member spamming posts and you believe it is because they are after jr+ member rank, just report the thread/post and move on, the staff will review the report and delete any posts considered spam.

I think my herby script is mostly used to GF :( but it's also the best way/one of the only ways to train the skill. I do agree that it seems like there are more GF's here than there have been in the past year (at least outspoken GF'ers). I've never been a big fan of it and it def draws unwanted attention here

Sorry, GF? now realized what it means

Yeah, I'm conflicted about publicly releasing some of the bigger stuff I'm working on (DG, Rorarii, etc.). I want to generate a lot of traffic and activity on SRL, but I don't want to generate 90% leechers.

I suspect more and more people with the leecher mindset are coming to us as a result of increasing failures with other services such as powerbot. Compared to them our ban rates are very low and as such attract the demographic that we ultimately don't want.

Additionally, RiD has been down forever and we are the natural alternative for those who don't trust injection and find security in color-only.

It would be very interesting to add in live stats tracking for your herb script. I'd say there are stacks of people that run multiple accounts on it to GF. Maybe even 50 accounts running it at once.

E: If you're keen I can host it and give you 2 functions to paste in your script ;)

And after giving out an infraction, please also report the post.

No SSRL member in recent history has given out a single infraction other than for banning Spam Bots.
