OSRS Poll #24 Removal of Randoms

Random Event Changes

Random events used to be an effective way to reduce the early on, low-tech bots that were once found in RuneScape. As bots have become progressively smarter, random events have lost their purpose and can no longer help us with catching bots.

We would like to change random events so that when they appear they do not interrupt you and if you ignore them they will simply disappear. This will allow players to continue receiving the rewards of randoms they desire, such as mime outfits or those tasty triangle sandwiches, whilst preventing random events from interrupting people's fun.

Different types of random events will be dealt with in different ways but the end result will be that all random events are made safe and there is no obligation to interact with them.

The following random events would appear but interacting with them would be completely optional, if you do not interact with them they will simply disappear:

Certers
Genie
Evil Bob
Sandwich Lady
Drill Demon
Quizmaster
Gravedigger
Freaky Forester
Prison Pete
Maze
Mime
Suprise Exam
Pinball
Beehive
Frogs
Molly
Strange plant
Drunken Dwarf
Capt' Arnav
Rick Turpentine
Old Man that gives you a random item.
Pillory

Equipment damaging events will be completely removed and the various broken tools will be fixed. This would include:

Ent
Exploding Rock
Big fish
Whirlpool
Broken pick axe
Broken Spade
Broken Rake
Abyssal Network

Aggressive random events will be retired from their day-jobs of harassing the citizens of Gielinor and will be relocated to fitting areas throughout the game. Randoms that will meet this fate include:

Evil Chicken
Shade
Zombie
Tree Spirit
Rock Golem
River troll
Swarm or Karamja.
Mysterious old man (Puzzle box)
Pirate
Security Guard

Question: Should random events be dealt with as described in the developer blog?

Thoughts? I'm pretty sure this will be voted for.
Means more stability for scripts :)

Tbh I don't think it's going to pass. To many hard core old schoolers and people that don't read the dev blog.
I'm going to vote no after thinking about it, since it'd help osbot out.

No it won't.. Remember before OSRS when they removed randoms? Guess what they introduced? Optimus..

Jagex won't just remove it for absolutely no reason without a backup. I'm sure they're not "removing" it but instead "replacing" it..

I don't play or bot either game so nothing affects me but I can see it affecting those that do play.

I can see this passing to be honest. When I watch livestreams, I see almost every streamer complaining about a random event (Mainly the ones that teleport you away). I know this is a small sample but I feel most players get annoyed when they have to solve one.

Makes sense, although there already is something like BotWatch in OSRS, just instead of it banning it puts you in a world for JMods to check.

I don't think they'd really spend much more resources on a better version of BotWatch for OSRS, unless it worked for both RS3 and OSRS.

I might have to take a look into making some small cash on 07 with Simba (color) - When using a reflection client, the detection rate seems higher

PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

Randoms are so annoying (and I legit)

I read like 10 pages of the forum and like 8/10 said that would vote on favour of it! so… i think its going to get voted positive. I might get into OSRS botting if this happens. i believe if this is taken away and nothing new is implemented gold prices gonna fall

If this gets implemented, I'm probably going to start botting OSRS aswell, with the randoms I'd have to babysit the scripts that were running because they would always get stuck

That's most likely true, if it was preventing bots from running there's absolutely no reason for jagex to even consider putting up a poll to remove them, I agree with you ^_^

I'm yes and no for this. I mean, yes for the botting part. But no for the nostalgia and 'old school' feel to it.

This * n^n.

Jagex aren't stupid, and it's well known that Botwatch has helped kill a large amount of botting in RS3. If randoms are removed from OSRS, it will be because they're implementing a new massive anti-bot system, nothing else.

That being said, I'm split as to whether or not I want it to pass… botting will be easier, sure, and it will take away a lot of the pain that comes with OSRS scripting. On the other hand, randoms are a huge part of OSRS to me because obtaining random clothing was a sort of mini-achievement. It took me years to get a full mime costume on my main back in the day, and I was very proud of my outfit because I looked like a total boss because of it! :p

So, in other words… botting vs nostalgia. Botting will probably win in the end.

Just looking at this thread with people saying they are going to goldfarm osrs because of this. I hope so much it doesn't pass, I don't want more goldfarmers on osrs.

Only one person has stated that they'll goldfarm on OSRS, it's really not that big of a problem here. I agree though that more goldfarmers in OSRS is bad. There's few players in OS as it is.

Looking at the JMod stream about the rotten potato random events were clearly made to stop macroing. This makes me believe that they have something else ready for us botters.. Also they won't be completely removed and not interacting with them might still raise a flag to Jagex.

I'll of course vote yes to this but I'm not sure this is as positive as you might think.

I think only two types of players will benefit from this: legit players who honestly dislike being interrupted from random events (quite a few in fact) and those who bot via color, like SRL & RiD. Gold-farming might increase also but I don't predict it would be a very noticeable amount, given the mass majority of gold-farmers use java-based bots which never fail a random event anyways.

If I'm not mistaken when the random events were removed from (now) RS3 Jagex had given the reason of why they were removed; to make room for the botwatch. Now you could go by the logic and assume that the randoms really are being removed due to the fact of inconvenience and huge request. But as always I think it's wiser, whether correct or not, to assume something different will take their place.

id assume this also. if they have an optimus type thing, why not implement it with the randoms? what good does it do by implementing the anti-bot and removing randoms? the 2 seem somewhat unrelated.

why replace when you can have redundancy?

Has anyone actually been botting on OS recently? After the huge effort they made to stop it I got worried and haven't botted since. They are removing the necessity to interact with the randoms if this passes. So they still show up, you just dont have to click on them if you dont want to.

You're right, having both would just make it even harder to bot, but I think that it's an attempt to keep OSRS alive. Let's face it, nostalgia only lasts so long before you end up with a game that barely anyone plays. RS1 is practically dead at this point, and it's inevitable that OS will end up the same way eventually. If removing randoms encourages new players to try OS and encourages older players to keep playing, it's a win for Jagex.

Looks like it's safe to say they'll be removed.

Honestly I think their removing this because the players wanted them removed. Not to add in another version of BotWatch or something such as that. Honestly if Jagex wanted to crack down on bots that bad, they would.

It wouldn't be fair to compare OSRS to RSC. The major reasons why OSRS will not end up like RSC is because OSRS is and always will be updated and maintained by the dedicated staff, along with access to OSRS via membership while RSC registration is now closed for good, even to members.

KeepBotting

This is an incredibly stupid idea on Jagex's part, but it'll be good for botting so I'll refrain from complaining.

I called it though. The only thing OSRS is destined for is to be turned into RS3 (ShitScape, EasyScape) with 377 graphics.

Good point, but I still think that they're getting rid of randoms to try and keep playing interested.

Does this mean that if you fail a random you don't get the negative effects of it? (Like taking the wrong food from the sandwich lady)
