Is there any planned or current research for a SMART that will work in resizable mode?

SMART can be set to load at whatever size you want. Whatever size you load SMART in, RS's resizable feature will fill the SMART window.
SRL, on the other hand, won't work unless you're in fixed mode. Initially, SRL-6 worked with a resizable screen, but the maintenance became too much for the few developers we had, and it wasn't reliable enough to run scripts for long periods of time.
SMART can run in any screen size, which means you can write scripts in resizable mode - the scripts just can't utilize SRL.

If you want to try SMART resized without SRL-6, you can use this code:
smart.create(X, Y, '', ['OpenGL32.dll']);
X and Y being the desired size.
