Internship in Sydney

Hey everyone!

As part of my study you need to do an internship for two semesters. I will be in my third year already after the summer holiday :norris: So my internship will be in semester one and two. I showed my interest in doing an internship abroad in an English speaking country at the beginning of this school year.

With the help of my study supervisor I have been able to get a spot at the University of Sydney. Some stuff I can get involved with:
  • Assisting with the overall design and testing of the new version
  • Working with a couple of frameworks - I'm planning to progressively convert parts of the interface to use AngularJS and possibly to incorporate Symfony, communicating with MySQL at the backend. We're doing this section by section so we maintain functionality.
  • Working with ElasticSearch to optimise our search functions
  • Writing internal documentation of files and checking for poorly structured or unused code / refactoring (also possibly some external documentation using Wordpress and screen video capture if he/she is so inclined - we're building a new web site at HeuristNetwork.org)
  • Integration of new mapping capabilities based on either GMaps (our current tool) or Open Layers (my preference), decision to be taken in June for a couple of projects requiring new mapping capabilities which we have to get out by September
  • Integration of new network visualisation based on D3 and output to GEPHI
  • Using Json and XML as data transport mechanisms
  • Building tools and documentation for data clean-up, including a bit of work with Open Refine
  • With UNSW/Intersect, possibility of doing some work on the Android app to improve the connectivity between it and Heurist
  • With UWS, possibility of doing some work with one or two different projects - there's a lot of different things going on there from 3D interfaces to digital art, and I'll have to work out with them who might be interested

So that is pretty interesting stuff! I have booked my flight and my visa got granted today so I'm pretty much ready to go. The main thing on my mind is finding housing in Sydney which is also why I made this thread. Is there anyone here that has some advice for me how I can find housing in Sydney, preferably near the university?

I think it will also be fun to play a sport. I have played basketball in the past but I'm thinking of doing something else now. Baseball, rowing or Australian football seems interesting. I have gained a good amount of mass since playing basketball, standing at around 6'6" 220 lbs now. So I think I should stand a chance during a football game..

Any general advice about Sydney and suggestions what I should do in my spare time are hugely appreciated :stirthepot:

I have no Australian or Sydney knowledge whatsoever.

On a separate note, congratulations on being able to partake in such an awesome set of involvements through your internship! Good luck and I hope all your experiences turn out for the best through it!

Well you missed the Future Music Festival.. I haven't been to Sydney in a long time, so I can't really recommend anything local..
If you want to do contact football, rugby union/league might interest you.. Non-contact, AFL is you're only option.. We don't really play baseball over here.. I was looking at what sports the Uni offers and there didn't seem to be a great deal of choice, rowing was suggested though: Sydney Uni Sports

In the way of housing:
On-Campus Accommodation
Off-Campus Accommodation

Good luck with your internship and I hope you enjoy the trip :)

I live in Sydney and work in the city (Swing by David Jones and spot the man in yellow and blue tradie clothes fixing electrical issues, and that will most probably be me lul), If you want to live near the uni, because its based pretty much in the city, I will warn you it will cost a fuck load. So try get On campus accommodation if you can haha.

For sports, im not too sure exactly, but I know cause if you live near the city the richer the community is, soo you will find those horrible Eastern Suburbs humanoids who think there the greatest cause there rich, so sport wise you will be vsing ass holes.

Heads up, you will hear alot about South West Sydney, (where i live) from people/the media for stabbings, fires, robberies, people dressing as cops and robbing houses, drug busts.. everything you could think of! It comes across as a typical bogan place and everyone that lives in the area is just .. bogan. While this may be true to an extent.. its not really, but yes, if you meet someone and there from Campbelltown, you should probably just run the other way :D.

Goodluck and enjoy !

Oh really.. Baseball looks interesting to me. My dad mentioned water polo.. not sure how that is though. I'm not sure about AFL. Rowing seems nice yes, but I think I simply weigh too much lol. They'd rather have someone that is 5'10" 160 lbs I would think.

I checked out those links already. I also sent a few emails to the housing department. It looks like on campus housing is only intended for full time students. Which I won't be I think.. at least not at the University of Sydney.

Yeah housing will be expensive regardless of the location.. especially compared to my current rent! Three times as expensive and half as much space.. :bart: So I guess that makes six times as expensive per square meter..

Yeah I will have to see about sports.. I think I will just visit a few clubs and try out.. if that is considered normal.. here in NL it is. At least I will have a good excuse.

I'll keep Campbelltown in mind..!

Congratulations on the internship! I'm not particularly close to Sydney (~12hrs drive) so I don't know a whole lot about the accommodation down there but I do have a friend studying law and playing rugby union for UNSW. The university will likely offer many different sports but if you're interested in football I definitely recommend union/league if you are into contact. However, with your height you could have a promising career in AFL ;)

Sydney is incredibly expensive to live in. And finding housing in the city, near the University will be a pain. You could try on-campus accommodation or at the variety of residential colleges at uni (International House might apply to you). If I were you, I would try and go with that college.

Apart from that, if you don't want to be on-campus, you could try the UniLodge in Broadway (which is essentially right across from the university), or search RealEstate.com.au for renting options.

Yeah, that's fine. I don't know much about this area because I haven't done any sport at USyd, but you could try Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness, as-well as join student clubs (alse see SUSF clubs) relevant to what you're interested in.

If you have any more questions or need any more help, please let me know. :)

Yeah the prices of everything are pretty insane especially compared to where I currently live. I won't be enrolled as a student and I'm not following any courses either so I can't apply at a lot of university housing options.

I also like to cook for myself as I am a pretty big eater and rather picky.. I estimated my costs to be around 500$ a week. But I can only spend every dollar once so the more I can save the better. But I don't want to live in a horrible place either just because it's cheap.

I checked out https://flatmates.com.au/ and the prices are a lot better and I saw some pretty neat places already. For the first few days I will be staying at the appartment of the professor I will be teaming up with. During that time I will visit some of the places I could potentially rent and see how it's like.

Those prices are a lot higher than the ones on flatmates.com.au. I'm used to traveling by train in the morning and I'm not sure how public transport is in Sydney. But here in NL I do actually get some work done on my laptop so that isn't too bad.

I'm also used to bicycling to pretty much everything. I heard that bicycles aren't too appreciated by cars but as a Dutchman I'm willing to give it a try…

Yeah I saw those clubs :) I'll check them out when I'm there..

I'm not sure how much I'm getting paid or if I'm even getting paid anything during my internship. I will be there one month early - I need to make an equivalent amount of hours to 5 months 40h a week I believe. So I will have some time to visit some stuff or take some days off.

Perhaps I can get a one day job as an app or web developer so I can earn some extra money to pay for everything. But that would mean that I would make a hell of a lot hours a week working. If it's an interesting, well paying job I'm up for it.

Any idea what kind of salary I can expect in Sydney doing that kind of job?
You are studying Computer Science right?

The main thing on my mind is still the housing part and the expenses. It's definitely not a dealbreaker but the more I can save the better because I plan to study for a few more years :norris:

I also plan to take the Cambridge Proficiency in English exam after a few months. My English knowledge is quite good I'd say, but I can definitely improve and learn some less common words. Speech is also a thing I can improve a lot, but that will surely happen during my time in Australia.

Depending when you leave, the trains will either be absolutely packed (peak hour, so around 8am-9am, 3pm-4pm, 5pm-7pm), or completely empty, so you may or may not get a seat. There's no WiFi available on public transport.

I live approximately ~10km away from the uni, and it's about a 10 minute train ride from my local station to Redfern Station (closest train station to the uni).

From: J J

I'm also used to bicycling to pretty much everything. I heard that bicycles aren't too appreciated by cars but as a Dutchman I'm willing to give it a try…

In the city, there's some dedicated bike lanes, but elsewhere not so much. Australian laws are if you're over the age of twelve (I think?), then you have to ride on the road and obey traffic laws, and you also are required to wear a helmet.

If I were you and lived far away from the uni (>1km), I wouldn't bike it. Just catch public transport, it's so much easier (buses go everywhere, and trains go to major spots).

Alright, I plan to live just as close to the university so that is fine.. We have WiFi in the trains here but it usually is ridiculously slow.

Luckily I have safely arrived in Sydney yesterday. I'm currently staying in the flat of my supervisor. Quite a large flat actually, not what I expected or what I'm used to in The Netherlands when I think of a flat.

My internship starts on monday. Going to work on Heurist mainly. I'm also improving my English every day. My speaking has already improved after one day it seems.

Also @Daniel; I guess we could also meet up one day. I want to get some things sorted out first though. Such as my own place, a phone contract with internet (especially for navigating) and maybe some more things haha. Amazing experience.

You're stuffed. Phone plans (good ones, with lots of data) can be quite expensive. Whatever you do, do not go with Telstra (overpriced, but if you want a reliable network and maximum coverage then it's the better one). I am with Virgin Mobile, on their $19 Simple Pre-paid 3-monthly plan (unlimited free calls and texts to other Virgin phones, which most of my friends also have so it's good for me. It only has 100mb of data, though).

EDIT: You might also want to check out Whirlpool for advice.

Well I found two good ones that are affordable.

Phone contracts
Exetel 29.99$ a month
500$ of phone calls (232x 2 minute calls)
Unlimited SMS
1GB Data
http://www.exetel.com.au/mobilephone/plans

TPG $17.99 a month
1.5GB of data
0.12$/min calling
0.12$/sms
Pay for the minutes + SMS you use
I only use around 20 min + 10 sms = 30*0.12$=3.6$ + $17.99 = ~20-25$ total
https://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/plus-plans.php

But I really needed an Australian number so I got a prepaid one right now. I exchanged euro's from myself and britain pounds that my father gave me.. got ripped of slightly but I had no other option lol. I guess the exchange rate was somewhat fair. I tried to buy prepaid at Vodafone or something at the Broadstreet shopping mall.. but they needed my passport which I didn't have with me.

Then I did actually found Telstra and they could live with my driver's license. So I paid 30$ for 400MB + a lot of texts + calls. Expires in 30 days. But I just really had to get something. Once I got my own bank account I'll get one of the two monthly contracts mentioned above.

EDIT: Wow I edited the wrong post.. lol

An update from me.. I have spent two months in Sydney already! Burning through my money pretty quickly here..

My averages so far:
Rent $300/w
Food $88/w
Telstra prepaid 7.50$/w
————————–+
So at very minimum I'm paying just below 400$ per week.
But on top of that I have variable costs from public transport, eating/drinking outdoors, hiking trips, etc. which has been 22$/week so far.

I calculated my estimated expenses at 500$/week, so at ~420$/week I am living 16% cheaper so far. But my variable costs have been pretty low so far. Once I take a holiday or do a more expensive trip that will jump up.

Overall I expect my costs to be pretty close to the estimated 500$/week over the full stay. There are also purchases that I needed to make once, such as hiking shoes, mountainbike, gym membership, etc. I will sell some things when I return, but other can't be sold such as the gym membership.

Over all weeks I expect that to come down to around 500$, so 20$ a week. So adding that I get 440$/week.. leaves me with 60$ "savings" a week to do other stuff. So yes.. if anyone plans to do an internship in an expensive city be prepared.

Very interesting though, and it should also look good on my C.V. I will be the International Representative of an IT Society as well as of tomorrow. Should make even more connections, and get a look behind the scenes ;)

I am also planning to keep studying for a Masters degree when I'm done with my Bachelors. I have my eye on a degree/scholarship where I would pay no tuition if I would get accepted. I seem to tick all the requirements they need - but only a very limited amount of students will get accepted. But if I would get accepted I would pretty much have earned the cost of this trip back.

In December I will also be taking the Cambridge Proficiency in English exam. I have been getting good grades on the example tests so far. My vocal skills have also improved - and I got another two months before the exam - so I think I will be able to pass.

If anyone here lives in Sydney and would like to meet up - sure! I have yet to finish any pubs.. Might meet up with @Daniel; one day.

At the launch of "Beyond 1914", "Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO Governor of New South Wales" in the background..

Visualisation I have been working on (Web, using D3.js). It is interactive, you can drag stuff around, play with gravity, etc.

JJ this is awesome!
I have to say that your english has improved massively. (Ps. do you mean find pubs or the alternative case that you blackout and don't finish the true pub experience?)

I have a couple of places that you can visit (I went to these when I was over there, I'll limit to Sydney):
- Chinese Garden of Friendship (pretty unique and relaxing, don't think it cost too much to get in)
- Fort Denison
- Bondi to Coogee Beach Coastal Walk - about a 1 and half walk and its awesome
- Manly Sea life - that place was awesome!

Hope you continue to enjoy your time over there!

Thanks man, it's mainly the smaller things that make the difference regarding my English I'd say. For pubs I just want to have some fun, have some drinks.. do some stupid dancing lol.

I mainly meet people during society events and school times. But not really outside of university yet. Students will have around 6 weeks of holiday or something in Dec-Jan. So there won't be any society events either..

Especially for those times I hope to be able to meet people outside of uni :P Not too worried about it though. Also looking to for people to celebrate Christmas, New Year and my birthday with.

I did the Coogee-Bondi beach walk already, and Spit Bridge->Manly this weekend actually. I will look up some info about the other, thanks :)

Well hostels are like 30-40$ a day, plus I would probably need to travel by public transport which would cost extra as well :P Don't think I can modify their site, lol. Would be paying close to 300$ as well.

All accommodation is just expensive. Even the International House: http://sydney.edu.au/current_students/accommodation/on_campus/camperdown/catered/international_house.shtml

Cost: Catered accommodation is priced at $367 – $509 per week.
Self-catered accommodation is priced at $438-$684 per week.

Really INSANE, and it's actually booked full…

Well I handed in my "halftime" internship report and received good feedback from my supervisor as well :) I have entered the Apps4NSW challenge #2 : http://data.nsw.gov.au/apps4nsw/challenge-2-%E2%80%93-state-records

Made a demo app with some basic functionality

I messed up due to the 12-hour clock, was under the impression that before 12 PM was 23.59 but turns out it is midday? When they ended it at midday they added midday to their webpage - so I assume they found it confusing as well. I managed to get a screenshot of the previous website text with the help of Google cache :)

Sent them a formal e-mail explaining my situation etc. Luckily I got an e-mail back today that my appliance has been added. Phew. Spent quite a lot of hours to come up with a good idea, write the required documentation and make a demo app. I hope to impress them with the demo app as I doubt other applicants have done so. Perhaps they have though.

The NSW state records API is open-source and I found a bug in it. Sent it to the guy that works on it so if he's in the judging team that might give me the edge. But if there are large companies in on this I doubt my chances would be too high. I was one of the winners of an app competition before though.

Overall it was definitely worth it to give it a try at least. I hope they will give me feedback regardless if I get chosen or not. Would be nice to know how to improve etc. I should score pretty high on their judging criteria. Except for the business points.

Because they have a fixed price of 15k$ I think they would probably rather get a company with multiple employees to do it than a single student. We shall see!

Social life has decreased a bit because classes have ended.. and so have society events.. But I'm still friends with all society people so I hope we can do some stuff together.

Deloitte is cool, but it is a huge company so it really depends on which office you end up working in. Some offices may be more uptight than others, people in one office may be awesome while another sucks, etc. etc.

Thanks for the comments guys, I actually read them on the day they were posted :) I had my last working day last Friday. Finished off with the most interesting project so far even though it only lasted two days. Needed to make an Android app and set up iBeacons, then dynamically switch content based on the nearest beacon. I got a proof of concept working and my supervisor was quite impressed. I might get hired to work on it for a couple days in January.

I have a meeting with my supervisor from the University of Sydney tomorrow. I spent 16 weeks there, 2 weeks at University of New Southern Wales and 2 weeks at University of Western Sydney. I like the projects at UWS the most and the uni culture and colleagues were all great as well. I received very good feedback from them and I'm pretty sure it will be the same case tomorrow.

My internship report contains 60 pages now, plus I wrote a week report every week which adds another 25 pages. I will need to go through it all and correct spelling mistakes and poorly structured sentences etc. Other than that, it is pretty much complete and I hope to finish this with a good grade. Considering this counts for 30 credits every difference counts for my weighed average.

So after the meeting tomorrow I pretty much got holidays for close to 6 weeks!
