He gets more defence and lifepoints from wearing the kite. It might have been his task before you met him there?

I'd personally rather more defence if I were AFKing.. Though, I haven't logged in since last year..

I remember back when I first started I didn't even know that I could switch combat modes, so maybe he's just not as expert as you Rjj :)

I guess that would depend on if you're going for a lengthy training session or aiming for higher XP rates.
