Post the different way Jagex can potentially "flag" you.

Copy/Pasta of a thread I made at another forum, would like to get the opinions of my SRL Family too!

It's going to be all/mostly speculation, but please post the possible different ways in which Jagex can ID/flag/etc. you/your PC/your internet etc.
Also (if applicable/possible) post ways in which to avoid said "detection methods"

This is not a thread for arguing whether or not any of these methods are actually used, just discussing various possible methods and ways around them.

I'll start with:
IP Address (And similar IPs within the same household etc. possibly), Way Around:(VPN, VPS, Proxy)
Hardware ID, Way Around: (Well, what hardware IDs exactly do they check? Can you spoof this? or use a VPS/VM)
MAC Address, Way Around: (These are linked to your physical internet device or something yeah? So MAYBE a VM, VPS for sure, but not a proxy?)
Jagex Cache Files, Way Around: Delete Em!

Seems like you're gathering ideas for the contest.

!!!

If you're not, you can always check the name of the window for starters.

Hah! That didn't even cross me mind actually, I made the original thread at another site before the contest was even proposed.

Umm that's a good one, I highly doubt that they even use that info since almost no bots hide/mask the window name, but still, it fits the description, thanks!

I Think in windows they can use a ell that can tell whether or not key strokes or mouse input is computer generated

Using a VM will let you log into the same world as another character from the same IP, so I'd assume they are using HWID to some degree.

I thought that they did this with the random.dat file as some people reported that making that file read only allowed them to log more than one account in.

Anyone on the internet can only see the public IP address you are using–a good example is a typical home connection where the router is assigned a dynamic public IP address where local intranet traffic assigned on private block IPs is masqueraded into one IP, the public one assigned to the router. The same trick is used for VPNs which also masquerade traffic into the VPN's public IP address. This is called Network Area Translate (NAT) or also known as IP masquerade. Hence, Jagex cannot differentiate your traffic by IP, even if there are thousands of people playing runescape on your home connection.

I'm not familar with any specific thing other than IP/MAC address. In order to gain any extra information, they will have to request your operating system to serve it up over their established network connection. When you open up a connection to anything online over TCP/IP, the only information that is transmitted in the IP Header that can incriminate you are the IP and MAC address.

MAC address of your local machine can be changed. The MAC address of the router/modem provided by the ISP may be changed if you have root access to it but ISPs lock their provided routers down. Changing the router's MAC address will also most likely cause complications with your ISP since DHCP uses MAC addresses to assign IPs and that is how they distribute their public IP addresses to your router… even if you have a static IP address. A phone call to your ISP will fix the problem and notify them of the changed router's MAC address.

How to change your IP address on any *NIX machine (Example is for Mac OSX):

ifconfig en0 down
ifconfig hw en0 DE:AD:BE:EF:CA:FE
ifconfig en0 up
Replace en0 with eth0/wlan0 on linux.

I don't know since I'm new to this version of Runescape :3

In conclusion, the only reason you should worry about changing your IP address and MAC address is if you have a bunch of accounts that have been banned on those IP/MAC addresses. If you casually bot on your main, no need to do anything.

Is this thread about the ways that jagex could use to connect multiple accounts belonging to the same person or group?

They only flag your ip once they determine you have been macroing. before banning said account, they check any other accounts logged in with the same ip and look at it closely, if they determine its a macro aswell they ban and ban etc. Flagged IPs are on Record Sometimes Months, or even forever depending on the size of the initial bust that landed you there. IF you believe you have been flagged, simply change your IP. if you have a Dynamic IP (Router) take a pen tip and hit the small red restart button on the back of it. if you have a Static IP (Modem), Unplug all Wires to your Modem overnight, and in the morning you will have a new IP [or call your ISP]. How they Flag an IP? i have no idea, i assume a bot of their own that looks for certain aspects, BUT, its strictly IP. they do not/can not use anything else. How to Avoid this? I have not seen it in action yet, but there is Talk of integrating the TOR browser to a Bot client, thus, when it connects to the internet to access Runescape, it gives each individual client a different IP Address, the same as if you integrated TOR to a Web browser. I hope this helps, Happy Botting :-)

Hardware Id
This is usually the hw id of the harddrive, to change it you can use specialised partitioning software or just format it if you dont care about your files to get a new one.

I feel HardwareIDs are a pretty useless way of identifying/flagging individuals.

First of all, in Java you will have to open up your own file handle to read these in… and Hardware ID is windows specific.

These are the most common methods to identify users… in Java.
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/net/NetworkInterface.html#getHardwareAddress%28%29

IP addresses and MAC addresses are sufficient for communicating over TCP/IP and therefore sufficient to know who is who at the period of time the communication has occurred.
