Hi all, would just like to get an opinion on the subject matter above. If you have a background or practice law, the input would help. Anyway, here goes.

In cases whereby there are official discrepancies between official documents, which takes precedence?

Case: Terms stated in Student Handbook v Terms printed on an Academic result transcript

In this case, upon successful completion of the program, a student will be graded and presented an award based on their academic progress. The problem arises when the terms / criteria for the award outlined in the official transcript differ from the student handbook.

For example,

Student handbook states that award is assessed based on credit hours

Official transcript states that award is assessed based on average marks

Additional info;

Both documents are generated by the registry of the school. With the handbook given to students on admission into the program while the official transcript is generated for the student on graduation.

So, based on the circumstances mentioned above, which document would take precedence in an appeal?

I know it is a bit to read and digest, but I hope it gets the point across. Would love to get some feedback. If you need more information about the case, just post and I will try to provide more details.

I would say the official transcript takes precedence over the handbook, but the best way would simply be to ask. Is there an assessor or exam officer where you study who could give you a definitive answer?

IMO the official transcript takes presidence. like every other thing a handbook, or outline, of what is accepted, or needed to be done, is a guideline to the ultimate task at hand. a rule book if you would. a rule book states what is accepted and what is not accepted. as every action cant possibly be described in it due to variation, it forms a generalization for the courses of actions that can be later assesed in a narrower picture. the handbook is a generalization of what really needs to be done so it does not necessarily cover everything for the sake of common knowledge and convenience therefore the official transcript takes presidence
