Thought this was an interesting mini-research video on RS3 vs. OSRS.
This guy interviews 'normal people' about their experience playing 45 minutes of RS3 versus 45 minutes of OSRS.

Granted there are some biases/flaws in the research but it brings up some good points.

I personally hope that in this "power to the players" year Jagex becomes more open to feedback like this. There are some quality ideas talked about all the time among intelligent market-savvy players, and yet Jagex always seems to reach conclusions that shoot themselves in the foot.

Jagex doesn't make games catered to players, it makes them for their business model and stock holders. Whatever an investor thinks is the best direction for the company is where the game goes. Ever since they got bought out 2 years ago(some US investment firm) is when you started to see all these crazy decisions that most classic players wouldn't agree with.

Ah…Insight Venture Partners yeah? I think that name is censored on the RSOF lmao.
While I do understand that, isn't their business/income based on player subscriptions and micro-transactions? I would think therefore the decline in new players is a concern for investors, unless their current strategy is that the ship is sinking and we need to milk as much money as possible before it sinks completely. It would seem to me that they are pooling massive resources into game content, but in all the wrong ways (cartoon-ish graphics for example, they are very off-putting and I would think it a logical choice to make the graphics appealing to as many people as possible and this wouldn't really relate to any investor concerns).

Strategies for profit make sense to a point (focus on Squeal of Fortune/Solomon's general store/other money elements) but if you don't focus enough on everything else, you render the money strategies obsolete (nobody left to use them) and then you have a real problem with your corporate owners.

Yah I would say a good chunk of their revenue comes from micro-transactions, but that was brought on after Insight bought up Jagex. Then I think the idea was to bring new players into the game with a more interesting game, or at least that was their theory anyways. And it was also a battle with the community itself. Everyone complained about bots(which was a problem) and now active players(or bots) has dropped from like 200k to 45k, so you figure that's 150k x $7 x 12months so $12mil less income a year. So people cry about bots, then cry about buying xp/gp. Jagex will do whatever will grant them more money, and since their revenue has increased with micro-transactions they are probably going to milk it as long as possible. All games come to an end after all.
