Looking to do an internship abroad

Hey,

In September of this year I will need to do an internship for two semesters. It is possible to do this internship abroad and I'm looking at my options right now.

The main requirement that I have is that I want English to be the first language of the locals. Other than that it would be nice to go somewhere where the weather is better than here. But that's just something extra.

Right now I'm mainly interested in mobile development and especially developing apps. I've got quite a lot experience with developing Android apps and I'm looking to expand to iOS apps later this year. I will know how to make a decent iOS app before the internship starts.

My best programming language is Java, but I also know quite a lot about Pascal from my Simba scripting days. I have decent knowledge of C++, HTML5, PHP, MySQL and JQuery.

The ideal internship would be at a company where I could create apps and do mobile related stuff. Is there anyone that has any advice?

Interesting country's so far:
- U.S.A. (But where?)
- UK (London?)
- Australia (Sydney or Melbourne?)

If you go to the US then you need to come here to Florida. No better weather year round! Except maybe California :p Not sure of any specific companies around here though…

My friend made a mobile app for Imgur and was then recruited for a nice internship with them, which has led to opportunities with Twitter, Snapchat, and Tumblr. This was all in California. I'll ask him about how that went.

As long as I don't go to Alaska I'm pretty sure the weather will be better :stirthepot:

Quite a few interesting companies in Silicon Valley.. but I'm not sure how viable it is to get an internship there. That would be amazing though.

Sounds good, let me know :)
I'm going to have a talk with my academic advisor and see what he thinks. It's worth a shot to just send them an email and see what happens.

I could apply for an internship at Google in London. I'm probably going to send that in today and see what happens.

Lots of upstart tech companies here in Austin :)

Don't come to Australia. Few technology startups, and few positions for international interns (if any). You'll be much better going to the technological centre of the Earth: the USA.

Hm alright. Australia seems to be pretty strict with visum's etc. as well. Even though the weather would be nice I would be spending a lot of time inside and programming 10 hours a day with 40 degrees and the sun shining on you might not be the best idea.. :P

New York City would be another option for mobile development.
Some banks and businesses here want to expand to the mobile field, but haven't found people yet.

A con about NYC is about how fkin expensive it is.
Its about $2500/month for a 1 bedroom/studio in the city, so you'd prolly be better off in the south or western states.

Damn that's insane lol. I pay 325€/month right now for something similar haha.

The banks here all have apps for Android and iOS and some even have them for BlackBerry & WP.. so we are ahead here?

Also regarding the UK the weather isn't that much worse than NL :)
But yeah no kangaroos. But no 1 feet spiders either.

I pay £255 a month rent so it's not far off yours. That is split with a flat mate, but if you wanted you could flat share or get a single room with shared stuff

Total rent is 650€ and we both pay 50%. Go quite a lot of space. More than other students at least :P Your rent seems pretty good but it really depends where I would work..

Anyways I got a meeting tomorrow with my academic advisor and a few other students that are interested to do the internship abroad.

Would be cool to go somewhere with like 2-3 others

Would like to speak the same language as the locals. Not just English with the people at work.

Uh oh

I had a talk today, guy is going to contact quite a lot people on LinkedIn that live abroad and studied at the same university in the past. Will hear how that works out in like 2 weeks.

Try Waterloo, there's literally hundreds of startups there.

Doing an internship at a start up would be pretty interesting. I'm not sure how big they usually are but I believe the company need to have at least 15 people and at least 5 software engineers.

I don't mind working a lot of hours if it is something that I enjoy. They can pay me half in shares :spot:

Although I'm not familiar with many software companies around, up here in Alberta the oil business is BOOMING, I'm sure you could find a job doing software development. (Avg income for the town of Grande Prairie [where I'm at] is 100k++/year [CAD])

Yeah I've heard about the oil business.. pretty insane. It is quite hard to get in contact with company's and I find it a bit scary to contact random people. I'd rather contact an acquintance of something to make sure he/she will actually pull through.

Anyways, I've just submitted an application at Google for a Software Engineer intern in London 2014.

We know that looking for a job is hard work, and we will make sure to carefully review your applications. While we're not able to reach out to every applicant, our recruiting team will contact you if your skills and experience are a strong match for the role.

They will carefully review my application but might not reach out to me? I guess they will at least tell me if I have been declined.

At least my English resume is done now!

Things in Australia are ridiculously expensive. Want to have some lunch? It will cost you probably about $12. Feel like going out to a restaurant for a meal? You'll be spending at least $20. Want to go to a pub for a drink? Easily $7 for one glass of beer. I don't know about Sydney, but in Melbourne that is definitely the case. Rent will cost you about $250 at the very cheapest per week, the average is about $350 per week for a tiny studio apartment. If you ever want to use public transport, well that's going to cost you a good $6 for a 2 hour ticket.

Don't have just one resume, craft each resume to be different depending on the type of company you interview,

Colorado and California would be my first two US states for suggestion,
(Seattle might be a option too)

Don't forget to ask question(s) that somehow targets the companies values (not directly, but a question that is still valid and appropriate) - this is usually at the end of the interview, when they ask if you have any question about us (as in their company/business)

Good Luck, you look to stand a formidable chance in the states

I think it's just as expensive in the bigger cities in the US.
If the company doesn't pay me anything I can't really accept the internship I think.
I'm willing to spend quite a lot but if I really have to pay 1500-2000/month to live without earning anything I will be broke in the end :bart:
6$ for 2h public transport sounds good.. but I think you meant more like $60?

Yeah I definitely need to be able to ask a few questions once they ask. I don't really have a preference for a state, I'd just like to go to a nice company really. Silicon Valley would be the best for sure..

My academic advisor thinks Australia would really suit me and he has been there a few times. I spoke with him monday and he told me he is pretty sure he can hook me up with a nice internship there. Sounds good to me.

I think the US is better company wise, but Australia seems amazing as well. Comparing the costs I don't think there is too much of a difference.
