How Long have You Played Runescape?
4 Year(s)

Are you affilated in anyway with Jagex LTD?
No

Were you Referred to SRL?

What is your general programming knowledge?
Programming is my hobby, and I have been practicing it for some time. I've taught myself a number of things, and I am always looking to learn more.

In terms of programming languages, I know a few of them to varying extents. My most familiar and most used language currently would be Ruby. I think it's a good general purpose language with a good library ecosystem. I also know some amount of Java, which is another general purpose language with lots of existing libraries for common tasks. I've also been learning alternative languages for the Java Virtual Machine, including Clojure and Scala, and I think they have a lot of interesting ideas for how to organize code.

I've mostly been learning general-purpose programming rather than any specific area of focus. I've been trying to use programming to automate things in my life. Mostly, this has been small stuff like downloading webcomics, etc. One thing I did a lot, though, was play computer games, so I feel it's only a natural extension of programming that I would want to automate those as well.

Are you a member of any other communities?
As far as Runescape related communities go:

I was once a member of Tip.It, but I forgot my account details there. Anyway, it seems their forums have become mostly abandoned in more recent years, so I haven't tried to rejoin.

I am a relatively new member of Sythe, where I have done a few trades.

Nothing else really noteworthy that I can think of right now.

Tell us about yourself…

I guess I'm a pretty ordinary guy in most aspects.

I discovered computers at a young age and I was really interested in how they were a device which could be modified to do new things. This led to learning how to use computers, and more recently, learning how to program computers. As mentioned above, computer programming has become a major hobby for me.

I like to chat with friends and occasionally go out with them. Usually, we'll just do whatever entertaining thing or visit whatever interesting place one of us has found recently.

I have a number of other hobbies, including jogging, eating new foods, and playing the board game of Go. Mostly, I'll just do what I feel like rather than any specific pattern.

I consider myself pretty relaxed and laid back. I think things in my life are going pretty averagely right now.

Please show us one (or multiple) of your scripts.
Here are two of my scripts.
I am linking to their original threads to show the most recent version of each, since they are being improved gradually,
as well as show earlier versions to show progress in their development.

Astral Crafter
http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107842

This is the script I am currently working on.
It crafts astral runes using the Moonclan teleport method for runecrafting exp and gold.
It supports runecrafting pouches and pouch repair through Lunar Contact NPC. This is my script that I am currently most proud of.
I am still working to improve its efficiency and reliability.

Ivy Power Chopper
http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107406

This was the first major script I wrote.
It chops creeping ivy for woodcutting exp.

Here is a tutorial I wrote.

Mini Tutorial on RS3 Pixel Shift
http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107283

Just a quick tip I wrote up on using and testing pixel shift for animation detection and how to adapt it for RS3.
This was a component in the ivy power chopper.

Your astral crafter seems to be missing failsafes. They are important because if something goes wrong the script may be able to recover, or at the very least shut down if it's hopelessly lost.

Yep. This is something I'm working on. Most failure cases are covered by each iteration resetting to a known good state by casting Moonclan teleport. However, there is definitely benefit to catching failures earlier. One thing I had noticed before was that sometimes banking would fail. I put in specific failsafes to retry banking. This significantly improved the efficiency of the script. Going to make more changes like that both so that the script runs more reliably and so that it loses less time to recoverable failures.

Please post a script or scripts in the code box, not solely the links to them. Thanks. :)

I only looked at your astral crafter as you said that is the better one that you have done. You definitely need to listen to BMW's suggestion, as there aren't many failsafes that I can see. I like the way that you break down the script into small functions/procedures for each part of a task. One of the big problems I can see w/o any knowlegde of astral crafting, is the fact that if we don't have all 4 pouches, it's gonna mess up. We need some setup to declare what pouches are being used, and if one degrades all the way for some reason, or we can't find it, to adjust accordingly. That goes along with the failsafe's part. Other than that I like what I see and I like the tutorial you posted. I would have already voted yes, but the fact you have under 100 posts and have only been around for a few months makes me wonder… I would like to see what some other members say, and I will think about it as well :) Good Luck!

Ps- It would probably be wise to edit you script, and post the updated one here.

I voted no.

See the points above, then add some activity.

voted no because you don't have a script posted here…

Y3h you gotta make it as easy as possible for us lazy members. In most cases no script posted = instant no. This is just my opinion - if I were you I would fix-up your astral script with those suggestions I posted on your thread, and use that in your application. Why apply with a half finished script?

Script is a good idea and the effort is there, however I agree, post a script please. We are lazy :P

Looked at the script, looks decent, but failsafes are a must for me.

Voted no based upon lack of failsafes, and activity.

I would like to see a polished script and a new app in the future, dont give up :)

I am not voting, but I will give some advice on failsafes. You have a solid core to start with, which is a good thing. Now failsafes should be easy. Run through the iteration manually and at each step instead of thinking about what you are doing think about why exactly you are doing that. Be specific with this. I even suggest physically drawing a diagram on paper that relates your surroundings and things you can check for (like essence in inventory) to what you need to do at that time. Using this you can easily write up some failsafes that determine what the script needs to be doing at certain times.

yes it sounds harder that it really is. just think like this: if im doing this or checking that.. what can go wrong?

Sorry @vwxz;, from the poll results, it doesn't look like you will be getting into SRL Members at this stage, please read over what other members has said and feel free to re-apply in 2 weeks :)

Best of luck in the future!
