I used to play Civilization 4 which I found really good :P I did look at 5 but wasn't sure how much has changed from the previous version.

Alot has changed in Civilization 5. Hex tiles, It's a bit "dumbed" down and less complex, but then the additions re-add some of the old things back into the game. There's no religion anymore, there's "policy trees" aswell.
It's a very different game compared to 4.
No more stacks of dooms list goes on

The expansions did re-add religions.
It was definitely a fun game, but some people still prefer civ 4.
