I don't think PayPal would need to 'team up' with Jagex to do this

^this, why would jagex need to "team up" with paypal?

Should always check the email address that sent it (and post it here :D)
Probably a phisher.

^^ Idk about that. Looks to fishy to me. It's probably not worth the risk.

most likely fake, they said it's an early christmas present, but it's already the new year…. Not to mention the email address looks strange.

I've received this e-mail. It had my RSN attached to the e-mail so I guess it was a valid promotion but the e-mail you received could of been a phisher

To clarify, this only works with accounts that once had members, but not anymore. But yes, Jagex is doing a legit penny promotion.

What's the link given in the email? Is the link specified to one account or can be used for any account?
Also do accounts that have once been a member through use of bonds count?

Well I did end up taking the bait after JDS posted something about it. Turns out it was legit, and if it weren't I didn't enter any PIN or anything for my bank so I'm good anyways. I got that free month about a week ago on 2 accounts.

well I clicked the yellow button on the email and it took me to a runescape webpage. It then asked for credit card, so I put it in and then it said transaction successful and gave me a paypal receipt for 1 cent, but said it would recash me in for next month at 7.95 unless I cancel which I did.

A verified Paypal really shouldn't be a problem for anyone.

I don't have a verified paypal? Mine is just a quick setup one that has a prepaid vanilla mastercard. I didn't do that verification to get a $3000 limit waived.
And to @riwu, it sent me to the paypal website the same as when you enter a prepaid $25 Runescape game card. It was some secure Jagex LTD Runescape webpage. It had to be legit. The payment also said it was made to Jagex and I didn't give any information that a phisher would need to hack and clean me. I also watch my login status to see if there is a foreign login and so far so good. I did move my cash stack (however small) to my other account though.

Jagex doesn't require full verification. They only require a credit card or the full verification (a bank). I don't see why you though this was a phising, any 8 year old kid can see if it is real or fake. The only thing people can do with phising is change the header of the email (spoofing the email address) and they simply add a hyper link. Hover your mouse over the link and check if it the right domain. Simple eh?

Kinda being a bit brash there. It's always better safe then sorry. BTW, there is a lot more than that , that can be done.
