Cleaning up the (Public) Help and Tutorials section

E: This has been done, see the new Help and Tutorials section here.

We have a lot of useful guides and information there, but it's disorganized in the sense that users don't know what they are for exactly. Almost all the guides are for SRL-5 and PS, with only a few for SRL-6 and Lape (which hopefully will increase in time), but it's very confusing for users.

I'd like to brainstorm some ideas on how we could make it less confusion and more helpful to users. Here are a few possible ideas:

  1. Thread prefixes in help sections ~ "Resolved" and "Help" (can users edit their thread to change the prefix when resolved?). Better yet, some kind of plugin that works like Stackoverflow that puts the best answer at the top and that automatically marks the thread as resolved. @Hobbit;
  2. Thread prefixes in tutorials sections ~ "Lape", "Pascal Script", "SRL-OSR" (which would basically be all guides that were written for SRL-5), "SRL-6", any more?
  3. A (ideally temporary) SRL-6 Help and Tutorials section.
  4. Could archive all old SRL-5 tutorials (but I'd rather just label them as SRL-OSR). This may be dependent on whether or not Simba will always support Pascal Script? @Wizzup?;
I made this a follow up from this thread.

I think the scripting help section should be more easy to find a lot of people end up posting random threads in random areas

Like could there be subforum links under the section?

I'm currently on a mission to make my current tutorials work with srl 6.

So far I've managed to update the standards and examples for my records guide to srl 6. Just working on the others now.

My suggestion is to move them all to outdated (or an srl 5 section), then any tutorials which can be used or have been updated for srl 6 then be moved to the srl 6 (or simply help and tutorials) section.

I like that automated system, the way it could pick best answer is by the number of +1's it gets.
Like how zybez does their forum system, the +1's mean nothing besides that the post is good though.

I'm not sure what you mean. There are already sub-forums in that section?

Exactly what I was thinking. :) Would make the help sections much better.

Yeah, I'm starting to think an SRL-6 Help and Tutorials will be easiest right now.

1&2 Yes

I would like all old pascal/srl5 tutorials moved to an OSR section (as long as they still apply to OSR). Then have an RS3 section for lape rs3 srl6 related guides. If/when pascal/the srl5 osr include framework is no longer supported - then move those guides to outdated.

That being said I would imagine a few srl5 tutorials could be converted pretty easily to srl 6, if anyone wants to take a crack at them :)

Oh yeah, easily. I plan on updating my beginner's guide. Exams are almost done so I might be able to over Christmas break.

Anyway, what do you guys think about this new structure?

* The "Botting Help and Guides" and "Scripting Help and Tutorials" will be merged with the new RS3 and OSR sections.

@Olly; mentioned we may not need 3 tutorial sections. If not, we can move it down to Beginner/Advanced (or some other name combination).

@Coh3n; That structure looks fine to me, very organised and easy to navigate.

A question though, why is this section here. I see you've linked it in the FAQ under "Learning how to write your own scripts", yet the sections empty.

Yeah sounds good. I would also be ok with two sections

That's the old section. I thought it was updated with the one we have now, but I guess whoever made the change created a whole new section. I don't think that forum is visible without the link. I'll update that right away.

How would I got about requesting tutorials be moved from one section to another?

This records guide of mine works for both OSR and RS3(srl 6), however I updated the example a few days ago to be srl 6 compatible.

Should I make two versions of this guide, one with an srl5 example and one with an srl6?

Also, my Common Scripting errors was also recently updated for srl 6.

You just need to report the first post of the thread and describe where you want it moved.

I'll move your common errors to "General Botting Help" and sticky it. For your records tutorial.. damn, I didn't think of that. I think it's kind of dumb to have two of the same thread, but I also don't think it's a good idea to have a "General" tutorial section either. You could have one thread, and include examples for both RS3 and OSR (if you want), then have the tutorial in whatever section you want, and create a thread in the other section that links to the original thread. That way you don't have duplicate threads, but rather one thread that links to the original.

Not exactly ideal, but it's the best solution I can think of. Or, you can stick with the SRL-6 examples and just have it in the RS3 section (I'll move it to RS3 for now).

Yeh I'll just leave the records tut there and explain it works for srl 5 too.
