The Mayor returns, I know some of you missed me (http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1261063).

As most of you will know I haven’t logged into SRL since August. The main reason for my departure was the amount of work/study that I’d let pile up while I was on these forums. I found myself addicted to RuneScape and to scripting. As soon as I woke up in the morning I would check my precious little bots, edit some code, make some forum posts and repeat this process until I went to sleep (which was usually after 12am). Even when I was in bed I would think about how I could make my script ‘moar l33t’, all of those quests I was yet to complete, which skills I would train first on my road to victory (i.e., a completionist cape), and even which female outfit was the sexiest in the whole of Gielinor. It was as if SRL/RuneScape was the sun and I was a planet - my whole life was fixed in an endless revolution and I couldn’t escape! For the first 8 months of 2013, RuneScape WAS my life. You probably know my 10 year old main ended up getting permanently banned #VetCapePlzComeBack , and I’m not going to lie, I was devastated at the time. Seeing as I played legit for about 9 years (on and off) I couldn’t help but think I’d just wasted hundreds (if not thousands) of hours of my life. Since then I’ve had time to reflect, and I’ve drawn a few conclusions from my experiences. Looking back, getting banned was actually a blessing in disguise.
Although I didn’t like to admit it at the time, I’ve always known that RuneScape achievements mean nothing. Sure it is fun and exciting, until you hit the higher levels where it just becomes a grind – mentally and physically. Some may argue the relentless dedication in pursuit of your goal provides you with a “sense of achievement” which may be good for your psyche, but in reality there are no tangible rewards at the end of the road. Obviously if you gold farm you might get a bit of pocket money, but that’s another story #MoneyOverBitches #GetARealJob . What would you rather have in your mid-20s - memorable life experiences and a successful career pathway, or a colorful cape that you can use to play dress up with your little pixelated man? I’m not against RuneScape, or letting out my rage on RuneScape, I’m just saying it shouldn’t be your sole focus in life, as the rewards are largely meaningless. If anything, by grinding out those levels you are proving to yourself that if you try hard enough, and stick to something long enough, you can achieve success. This probably sounds silly to most of you and you’ve heard it all before, but RuneScape is addicting to the point it can encompass all of your thoughts, and you don’t really realize it until you’re “out the game”. There are bigger and better things out there to tackle.
That point aside, I know it sounds as if I regret playing RuneScape, but I don’t. If it wasn’t for RuneScape there would be no SRL. The knowledge I’ve gained while on these forums is incredible to say the least. The great thing about SRL is, at the end of the day, you actually get something out of it. Thousands of RuneScape players have played for weeks, months and years and left with nothing. Many SRL members have come and gone from these forums, but left with something that money cannot buy. I didn’t come from a computer science background (health science FTW) and all coding concepts were foreign to me. The combination of the SRL community and RuneScape made learning to code fun, and help was always there when I got stuck. In most cases I had a clear goal in mind (e.g., to mine that rock) and I could see the results of my code in a practical way that was exciting and easily understandable (e.g., ore in your inventory). If I had to learn programming in any other environment I would have probably lost interest pretty quickly. Even though Pascal isn’t used that widely in the real world the concepts are transferable to almost all languages, and more importantly (in my opinion) you are left with a newfound ability to solve problems (life is problem solving). I’ve been investigating C/C++ recently (for Arduino mainly) and it’s easy to pick up. Even writing formulas/macros in excel is like writing English (everyone at work asks me for excel help these days #HailKingMayorTheL33t ). Whilst I’ve been away, I got stuck into my work at university, and it’s definitely paying off! #NoFateButWhatWeMake #DrTheMayor Even though I (like many of you on the forums) are no longer interested in RuneScape itself, SRL cannot exist without it (I guess you can call this commensalism but it might turn into parasitism if you bot too hard and ruin the game #BiologyPrinciplesFTW ). I guess the moral of the story is keep doing what you’re doing, write scripts, play bot RuneScape, but keep in mind that level 99/MaxCape/gp/CartoonGF shouldn’t be the goal. The knowledge, skills and friends that you take away from these forums should be.
The academic year is drawing to a close, so I will have some free time over the next few months. I did promise to update my scripts, and I’m actually intrigued to see how lape and SRL6 work. Plus, I don’t like my scripts sitting in the outdated folder gathering dust. You will probably see me around the forums from time to time #HelpMePl0x and I’ll probably play RuneScape for a bit, albeit it very casually, but more than likely I’ll just login to the game to test my scripts. I feel this sort of turned into a motivational speech which was not my intention. All I wanted to say was “hey guys I’m back”.
p.s. I noticed @Sjoe got suspended, I always knew he was a l33t scammz0r hax0r. Sjoe and JennyCoco should get married, and then they can have @JasmineHunter babies.
