It's not free as you would sell the gold you use to buy the Bond anyways.
Atm, it's price (15M on the GE) is about normal cost for a membership if you sold gold @ 0.25/M.

well i wasnt expecting that!
however, the way i see it, the only people who will buy/sell gp are those after a few mill or a month or so's membership … surely there wont be that many people selling 100s of millions for bonds, i mean thats what 10+months worth of membership?
so the people that want to buy large quantities of GP will still have to go to goldfarmers … just my opinion :)

The price of bond is a little expensive at this moment.
While costing only 7.95$ for a 30-day prepaid card, the price of bonds is 5$.
However, it will hurt the gold seller. Since paying 15M for 14 day membership is quite reasonable, this make gold seller won't be able to sell gold at price higher than 033$/M .
smurg
2013-09-25 12:15:23
Well bought 6 of them in the GE atm for 7.5M each. So cheaper than CC atm if you buy it with the account that will use it.
It costs 1.5m to convert it into a tradeable form.

Because they can now buy this bond from Jagex, selling it for RS gold, bypassing any risk of getting banned. The market will also adjust to reflect real life cash/RS gold universally, so gold farmers should not be able to sell cheaper either.
So.. less gold-farmers. I suppose that is good?

The cost of buying these Bonds with $ and selling for GP is twice as expensive as buying gold from farmers/sellers, so only the maxed/cautious and ignorant will do it this way.

At the moment. Now I could be wrong here, but why wouldn't the prices balance between the two? Or at the very least force goldfarming to be far less profitable?

It could but will be balance in the favor of where the demand is.
So at the current prices, this update would only make goldfarmining more profitable.

Great deal for membership. It will only hurt GameCard re-sellers.
Goldfarmers will always be able to sell it cheaper then the bonds are $/1mil Wise. Its just the way the rs market works. Only really paranoid people will buy bonds for rsgp, its super expensive

I have to admit that I don't see how this can in any way make goldfarming more profitable. There are now two ways to acquire RS gold with money in a market that used to be a goldfarming monopoly.. so how on earth are goldfarmers in a more secure financial position?

Currently, there is a subset of people being tapped into that bring $ into RS that didn't before.
So there is more demand for gold to buy bonds ($/GP rises as demand rises) and we can buy RS members atm at cheaper prices.

Hmm. Didn't think of that possibility.
Interesting, I guess time will tell how this will effect gold farming, my guess is negatively. Let's look at this again in say a month or so.

Seems like this is pretty much it. Gold farmers will probably still exist, but when you have a legit non-bannable way to purchase in game gold with real money, you're less likely to go to gold farmers since doing so can get your entire account banned.

I'm a bit lost on how this hurts anything, or how memberships are so 'cheap' right now? (Just though a bit more, maybe I understand better now).
First of all, RWTers will just switch to trading bonds instead of gold, or gold prices will just adjust to fit. There is still a demand/supply for gold, I don't see how bonds will change any of that at all?
This seems to mostly just hurt membership trades, which don't even move close to as much GP as gold farmers/flippers.
From a $/days standpoint, bonds are more expensive for membership:
$5(Bond) / 14 Days = $0.3571/day of membership.
$7.95(Membership Card) / 30 Days = $0.265/day of membership.
However maybe (idk the prices) from a GP/Membership standpoint bonds are cheaper for players to buy legit from each other and then redeem themselves for membership.
Thanks a lot for tagging me @masterBB; that was nice of you :)
I actually only deal with RS07 things right now, so this has no/little effect on me as far as I can see.
Edit:
Bonds are currently 12.3M, and cost $5 each.
So a cool way to think of it is that Jagex is essentially selling gold at $5/12.3M or $0.4065/M which is really high compared to average EoC gold prices of $0.28/M - $0.32/M.
So right now, as far as I see, based on bond prices in $ and gp it's better to go with a RWTer than Jagex.
Edit:
This seems to only be a win for people who are
1) Unable to use their IRL $ to buy membership
2) Don't know about/Are too scared to use RWT Forums/Black markets
And therefore buy/sell overpriced gold (in the form of bonds/GP) to exchange for membership.
If you can do math, and know bout any RS black market forums, you can see that as of right now RWT is way cheaper.

You have got to be kidding me … thats absurdly high … no wonder they rarely ban for RWT … that would remove 50% of their subscriber base! I have bought gold 1x and hired someone to get me a cape 2x … I want to buy more gold but I feel I would rather buy from a trusted member here than with bonds …

Why do you think jagex would be hesitant to ban anyone? This doesn't make any sense. If jagex doesn't do anything about the game and all the legit players quit, there'd be no one to buy these gold coins because botters would have no reason to bot or buy gold.. Ppl would be botting for nothing. There'd be no competition.
It'd actually be beneficial to them if they banned every bot out there. Even if it means the botters quit. They'd get more legit players.
I just lol'd at how everyone immediately brings up Yohojo for "gold farming & blackmarket" threads.. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing tbh..

These are clearly the wrong signals to spread to a cheating community like ours.
- First off: there is this andragoge expression on MMG's face. (MMG? MMG?) The forced smile, the "you can go safely to sleep now" sociopathical approach. I really dislike people that do this trick. And he does it over and over again in his vid.
- Second: he admits -for the first time, and with the same pointless smile- 40-50% of their userbase is actually buying rs-gp…on a fairly regular base. Ouch.
- Third he admits to have removed 3.7 trillion. Waaah? Thats a market crash!
- Fourth: he declares the economy stable. Hell yeah, by removing 3.7 tril gp?
- Fifth: if I understood correctly, I can now by a Bond and sell it for rsgp on the GE, right? So ultimately Bonds will dictate the value of rsgp outside rs, and since Jagex is distributing these themselves, they now control the market fully.
- Six: he declares cheating dead. Wrong words my friend, I accept the challenge. I will come back to cheating only to proove you wrong, even though I dont have that time at all.

From what I've been told, meh. It's exactly the same as what EVE online does, and doesn't hurt the game at all (in fact, it enhances it). However, RS and EVE are entirely different games, especially where ISK is much harder to get than GP, so we'll have to see how it pans out.

EVE isk is still being sold on various sites, including playerauctions. I assume it will be the same with rsgp.

How responsive to feedback does everyone think Jagex will be about this change, given its definitive and swift implementation? I mean, if everyone on the forums just rants the hell out of bonds, is there any possibility for them to rescind, or even just alter their decision based on feedback? Obviously, this would cause them to look stupid, especially the sooner the change takes place. Also, if they have some epiphany that bonds are horrible and the entire player base despises them, what then? The decision was just so definitive and unexpected that I can't say any outcome to be good for Jagex, taking into account people's inherent dispositions to dislike and avoid change.

This has nothing to do with bonds, and is just your own interpretation of his body language and words. He sounded fine to me. This is rather blatant ad hominem you're using to discredit what he's saying.
[*]Third he admits to have removed 3.7 trillion. Waaah? Thats a market crash!
Except it's not because it's affect on the market depends on the period of time during which this money was removed from the game. He said "this year alone". Which equals about 400billion per month. Why would that cause a market crash? Especially when he says this gold was removed from gold farmers, which means it was idly sitting in their banks contributing nothing to the economy?
[*]Fourth: he declares the economy stable. Hell yeah, by removing 3.7 tril gp?
See above.
Very non-constructive post.

There won't be such a reaction to bonds from the playerbase, because it only serves to give people more options.
Since the severe problems of bots/goldfarmers/RWT became very apparent to jagex in ~2006 they knew they had to tackle the problem. This "bond" system isn't very complicated at all and was probably the first idea on their minds before the grand exchange and trade limits.
They're simply exhausting options. Doing RWT themselves and taking control of the gold market was always a very clear option, with very clear pros and cons.
At this point, it's not about how the players react to this change. Players opinions to be honest are not always rational and subject to change very rapidly as bandwagons stop and turn around. Some players not liking bonds for any reason means nothing to Jagex if this system will cut out RWT by say 50%. That's whats important to Jagex because they know it does more damage to the game than some players being annoyed.

No de-construction here, just an observation about gold removal. Most likely, the removal of 3.7 trillion gp is due to the several bot nukes they've conducted. Many of them were probably gold farmers, so it is not necessarily surprising that this much gold was taken out of circulation. Given this notion, the impact on the RS economy would be negligible.

Perhaps I'm missing something here but this doesn't add up to me. I bought one of these bonds in-game for the surprisingly low price of 5m GP and it gave me +14 days of membership. So for a full month, 2 bonds it'd cost 10m GP, and with the market price of RS3 gold being $.30-$.35 / million you could actually buy, from gold-farmers, a full months membership for $3-3.50. So $3.50 as opposed to Jagex's $6.50 (only if you're an existing member, it's more than that if you're new), isn't this just all the more reason to buy cheap gold and use that to buy bonds for half the price of the membership fee?
Maybe there's something I don't realize here but as far as I can tell this only encourages RWT, not only to be rich in-game but slash the costs of membership fees.

Yep, memberships way cheaper and the blackmarket isn't really affected by bonds tbh.

Well for you to get a full month, somebody has paid Jagex 2x $5.00 instead of $6.50 as they would normally.
- Jagex makes an extra $3.50 per membership so they're happy.
- Goldfarmers can sell people gp to buy memberships so they're happy.
- Membership buyers save $3.00 per membership and they have an easy and safe method to get them now so they're happy.
The only ones who lose out are pin sellers because they can't afford to match the prices.
I suppose the people who buy bonds from Jagex are wasting money, but they don't seem to mind. Just another payment on daddy's credit card I suppose :/

3.7tril GP is nothing, If it was removed in a day? Yes it would effect us. But most of it was taken off hoarding accounts (high level mains/mules that got banned like 2 months ago)
or was taken out of the game before it reached the market (bots that get instant banned within first 3 days now)
I know one guy who got banned with 200bil alone. It adds up quick
Also you guys are forgetting the 10% converting charge that is taken into account when traded, 10% of the ge price is instantly removed from the game. HUGE money sink
Long term i expect this to make the economy stabilize and slowly rise till it equals the GP rate of bonds

No more paying for membership or solomon's stuff… that's what I care about :B jagex was very intelligent of selling an item instead of directly the gold… It's simple: You use Real Money to buy an object that will get you RS money, but this RS money comes from another player. This another player will use the object to trade for membership/runecoins/spins… So there is no rs money injected on the economy, in the end…
Since there is no rs money being injected on rs, it might not affect economy directly…

Short term, black market gp will crash cause of panic selling. Long-term i believe it will actually rise some, due to the fact atm buying membership via bonds is ALOT cheaper then paying with money. Pin sellers are gone. So all the business from pin sellers will now go to gold sellers so people can buy bonds.
Bonds have forever put a cap on gp prices though, black market gold will only rise to the point where its slightly cheaper then bonds, never above. Cause why would someone risk being scammed from a gp seller and/or banned when they could legally buy it?
