What is better? DTM's or bitmaps

ok, i ran an engine that i made myself, made a gear in macromedia flash 8, and made the gear move in random places very fast. when i used the DTM, the DTM was spotted all the time (while the gear was moving extremely fast) and never said ' the gear has not been found'. when i used Bitmaps on the edge of a gear, the script did not find the bitmap all the time. the bitmap was only found at 20% of the time. with DTM's 100%.

I conclude from now on (until somebody tells me another test method) that DTMs are best.:)
just for your information ppl

it all depends on the use… i prefer bitmaps tho as they are easier to understand..

the reason it didnt find the bitmap when moving extremely fast is because it takes a couple miliseconds more to find a bitmap than a dtm.. and when using it for RS.. it doesnt really matter.. ;)

ok, i'll run a test so the gear moves much slower, so it moves every 500 seconds

EDIT: and on my first test, i also made the gear spin like a developer gear while its moving

EDIT: i have ran another test this is my progress report with the bitmaps method with the animation moving every 500 miliseconds

***************** findings report***************
**found gear 145 times in this run
**missed the gear 855 times
**gear finding percentage is 6%
*************************************************
the script had to try and find it 1000 times

i could see that the bitmap couldnt be found when the bitmap was twisted around or placed somewhere else

ok, i have ran lots of tests for the DTM's this time, i ran it with some different speeds.

Depends what your using it for. Also, the tolerance.

[off topic] lol you almost have 400 posts! congrats!

ok, does anybody like me to compare other things?

I have preferred DTMs over Bitmaps in almost any situation. Basically, only use bitmaps for things that are stationary (unless you know how to use the deformed and tolerance related bitmap functions, but it's still not as good as DTMs). I haven't used bitmaps in a long time just because almost anything can be done with DTMs, and usually with a faster search.

Same here.
DTMs (i think) are easier to make.
And smaller and easier to process in a script

…Just go to the tut island section and look for some dtm tuts…ur bound to find one rather then dig up this.

heh, i know how to make dtms and stuff, i just would have liked to see what he put together proving dtms are better
