Soo… Im confused. What just happened?
It appears as if he attempted to steal something.
In the US, what he did is not stealing/shoplifting. For it to be considered shoplifting you have to take the item past the last point of sale, ie the doors of most stores. or something like that. Maybe theres an attempted shoplifting charge in there, possible assault, but meh. nothing major.

I'm pretty sure that in canada it is illegal to shoplift and not make it out… but they don't have suits that jump you at the door. It's more like: "please put that back and we'll have a chat with constable wutangshoplifter". Not going to lie I shat my pants when that happens, and I'm the most neutral mooded person aside from steven hawking.
In Michigan atleast, if you attempt to conceal an item (put it in your pocket / hide it) then they can stop you and make you remove it, I do also believe they can charge you as well. However, most places around me don't give two poops whether people steal from them. Meijer's cameras are dummies, Walmart looks the other way.. However Walmart will occasionally tackle people…

That is the way it is supposed to be, from what I've gleaned, Walmart usually pays off people out of court.
