I decided to take apart my laptop to clean the dust out from the fan area. Here are a few pictures, you can click on them to see the large version.

Keyboard and palm rest removed:

Close up of fan area:

Fan & heatsink assembly removed:

Large dust bits that were in the fan:

Fan area before cleaning:

Fan area after some cleaning:

That concludes the fan cleaning part of the thread. In the next part, I have questions for people who know about thermal paste and related things.

CPU:

CPU Heatsink:

Other thing with a heatsink and heatsink:

Anyway, Do those things look normal or is there something I should put on them to make them conduct heat to the heatsink better? Thanks :)

clean off the paste on the cpu heatsink & put a dot of paste on that cpu heatsink
aka reapply the paste

Ah very nice. I've taken several of my laptops apart and it's fun to see how their built (not that I know much about the laptop part making/designing parts process).

The dust clogs are fun, also very nice to have some good grade artic thermal paste too (not that you should be applying it on a regular basis…) - erm just realized I lost my spare tube :S

Anyways Cheers, nice pics too.

I had to take one of my laptops apart too. It was overheating and would turn off after just 10 mins of being on.
I figured the fan was broken. Then I removed a sick amount of dust that had blocked the fan and problem solved :)

It's definitely worth doing, mine runs much cooler now than it used to. If you search for your laptop name and cleaning you'll find videos on youtube on how to safely disassemble your laptop. Remember to put screws somewhere where you won't lose them, and maybe make a not of where they came from. This way you know where to put them back in when you put it back together :)

When I do bother doing it I will probably just replace my laptop keyboard. I need to get some heat paste as well since I have dedicated graphics + cpu to do.

Most manufacturers require cleaning at least once a year, however, the screen, keyboard and casing should be cleaned more often.

The diverse types of dirt, from dirt common to human hair, animal hair, cigarette butts. These factors could cause damage to the screen, affect the operation of the fan or laptop that you have trouble with the audio I / O.

You should use the following tools to clean the laptop: computer containing compressed air, cotton swabs, cleaning solution, such as soft cloth to clean cotton cloth.

However, you should limit the sanitary hardware. The first removable hardware that you void the warranty (if the laptop is limited). Second, the hardware is so rare dirt underneath and wrapped carefully. The last reason is the laptop's hardware devices sensitive, if not a pro, you should opt for the professional repair shop to perform the cleaning.

Here are the cleaning instructions for the basic parts of the laptop:

Outer shell

Use a wet cloth and a soft cotton cloth to clean the old shell. Do not use abrasive cloth and strong detergents. Do not spray cleaners directly on the skin that have indirect injection onto cloth.

Users accustomed to " living with dust " and forget the dust hazard to health as well as PCs . Let's find out dirt damaging computer how offline!

When the cooling fan with dust getting in the axis of rotation , the fan will spin slowed down, or stopped . This error may not immediately affect the operation of the computer , but the temperature in the tank will always be high. Similarly, if large dirt or fur heat shield slot , the cooling process from the chassis also blocked out . So even if the fans are running at full capacity , the hot air will be stuck inside the chassis .

Where dirt clog the fan power , the risk of damage to be greater . The cooling power is not in the proper temperature will lead to the phenomenon of fire due to heat . In particular , for systems capable of automatically changing fan speed , if the temperature sensor dust soiled , the cooling fan will not adjust speed cooling properly .

When the RAM slots and slot expansion card installation sticky dirt , if there is dust and moisture sucking , touching circuit phenomenon will occur , damaging the slot or cause damage to the motherboard. This risk may also occur with interfaces such as USB , printer port or COM port .

Reader floppy or optical disc reader to stick dirt , not only damage the eyes to read , but also scratched discs when you put them in the drive slot . The important data on the disk will be lost and very difficult to restore when the disk was scratched because of this reason .

The two main input devices of the computer keyboard and mouse can also be affected by the type of dirt . Keyboard stuck too much dirt stuck key will cause the phenomenon . Then press a few keys though not continuous but its characters sent to the operating system , causing blockage keyboard buffer . But when the mouse sensor dust on top , or roller bearings , will operate flutter , or jerky movement on the screen .

The other peripherals such as monitors , printers and scanners are also affected by the dust . Screen slot dust cover will heat damaged , or touch inside the circuit . Printers can jam occurs , or scratched the axis of rotation of the laser printer .

Photo scanner with glass that has received the pictures, so if scratches dust , will create the image of being dirty stain resistant under it
