why do you code?

Just a general discussion, four way question:

  • 1- Why do you code (or program)?, how did you get started, furthermore, how do you maintain motivation?
  • 2- what is your favorite coding (or programming) language(s)? and why?
  • 3- what project have you enjoyed writing (or participating in) the most?, what was so special about it?

Questions aren't limited strictly to coding , feel free to express your self in the longest essays possible, express yourself!.

————————————————————————————————————————
About me: Am a novice Simba scripter.

1) I script because its an enjoyable & satisfying experience, you learn a lot and accomplish even more. Started scripting in April of this year. My initial goal was to create a revived "Caviak" or "Hy71194 Fight Cave Runner" like-script on OSRS, a script that would un-stuck your character from the corners, I achieved my goal and expanded onto it. The fuel that motivates me is user feedback: be it good or bad without it you can't progress.

2) Pascal is my most adorned coding language so far; simply put Pascal's online community - namely SRL (forums) is phenomenal, i have yet to encounter an online community equal to SRL in any social or educational aspect: be it the welcoming atmosphere or the thorough tutorials - its lovable and demands your interaction. Pascal in it self is easy and fun to learn and put to use!. Furthermore, while am still new at it, i can't help but show my affection to AHK! (AutoHotKey) such a small but powerful tool, what really makes it great is the backbone of it, the IRC community: a selfless, patient, supportive and just flat out generous collective of amazing people!.

3) I've mostly enjoyed writing my Fcaver script, learned a lot from the process. It went from a clutter of mess to an okish working script, and just to see it all work and to receive the positive feedback that it did - makes all those countless nights I've spent writing it worth it all. It was also my way to show gratitude and to give back to Scar/Simba for helping my macroing causes on Runescape since 2004.

So how about you?, my kind friends, what makes you happy?

1) Anything I need, I had a need so I read books, It's something I need.
2) Python, Does it need a why?
3) Simba, just the project I've spent the most time on.

1- Why do you code (or program)?, how did you get started, furthermore, how do you maintain motivation?

I gained an interest at an early age, eventually pursuing a related degree in Computer Engineering (a lot of hardware base in there though too), and getting a job in the field last year. So my job maintains easy motivation (money), but as for unpaid programming such as what I do here, it's simply for the challenge or for some desire of the end goal.
Most scripts I write here are purely for the challenge, and as I've written each script, it has definitely been much more difficult (and larger) than the prior script. Although, I definitely still have a long way to go and new techniques to learn for scripting. Although I have done some work on some video games, that has been entirely for the fun of it, and to see my goals and work come alive and become something I can play with. However, sadly, with video game projects, it's very difficult to write one from scratch on your own, so that work has fallen off somewhat since I graduated college last year and no longer have the same people all living around me to work on them with me (or alongside me if we're doing solo projects).
2- what is your favorite coding (or programming) language(s)? and why?

For reasons relating to pure power and versatility: C++ (my favorite project from this has been work towards creating my own MAME system that played every video game from Atari 2600 to PS2 and Wii - Super Smash Brothers on an arcade machine with a joystick? Yes please).
For reasons relating to ease of programming and having a huge available library at my fingertips: C# (it happens to be the main language I do my job's work in, and it has several excellent frameworks for programming games and introducing them to multiple systems, such as XNA).
3- what project have you enjoyed writing (or participating in) the most?, what was so special about it?

Either the MAME arcade, or one of my video games, for sure.

I write Simba scripts because it's fun and I want to be able to give back to the best community that I've been a part of. I started because I wanted a script but nobody wanted to make it for me. As for the motivation to continue, I'm not sure. I don't enjoy runescape much anymore, but I like the challenge of scripting and "beating the system" as it were. If Villavu wasn't like it is, I probably would have quit runescape a year ago and never learned to script.

As for favourite language, I have to say Pascal. Why? Well it's the only one I know, but also I like how easy it is to learn. I don't think I would have been able to learn Java like I learned Pascal.

I haven't really participated in any projects, I've only written scripts. As for which one I enjoyed the most, I think I enjoyed making my fly-fisher more than the others. It wasn't a difficult script, but I learned a lot while I was making it. It had to walk between spots when the spots ran out and had to bank too, so it probably had the most logic than any of my previous scripts. I like how it turned out because when I started I didn't know how I was going to do it but I figured out along the way :)

1: Why not? Why do something by hand when you can make a program to do it all for you? My never-ending quest against being inefficient motivates me to code.

2: Hmm. This would probably have to be MatLab. Syntax is similar to python, but matlab is used for numerical analysis and lots of computational things. I like it because i like math. so… Yeah. it does all my math for me.

3: Projects? Meh. none really. imo all my code is crap and should never be released publicly. I code for myself. If its messy, so what? im the only one that will probably ever see it.

1. Because it's fun.
2. JavaScript (read node.js). So fast, scalable and of course, non-blocking :)
3. My precious poker bot.

1- Why do you code (or program)?, how did you get started, furthermore, how do you maintain motivation?
Because I like creating stuff, games, people giving feedback/learning stuff
2- what is your favorite coding (or programming) language(s)? and why?
Pascalscript, because it is simply and easy to learn and no.need.to.worry.about.a.bunch.of.dots.to.acess.memory.too.often, no really because it is easy
3- what project have you enjoyed writing (or participating in) the most?, what was so special about it?
Telos RSPS fighter, because I have learned a lot from making it

1- Why do you code (or program)?
I find it really interesting to code and then execute it to see it is indeed doing what you wanted it to do. There is so much freedom and nearly anything is possible. There is so much more to learn even if you think you know a lot about a specific programming language already.

2- what is your favorite coding (or programming) language(s)?
Java because it's rather versatile and Object oriented. Also because the majority of the first year of university was about Java so it was a good idea to learn Java. I've used it for Android development, making data structures, making RuneScape scripts and attempting to create a RuneScape bot.

3- what project have you enjoyed writing (or participating in) the most?
My Great Orb Project script is still one of things I enjoyed making the most. I just started scripting a couple weeks ago and I started on something that no one has ever done (color based). It felt amazing when I completed it and it worked relatively well. I've rewrote it in Java later and after running it for 50 hours on 4 accounts without any problems I called it flawless and stopped the script.

Right now I'm working on PulseBot together with NKN and you learn a whole other side of Java.. bytecode and reflection. Detecting patterns, modifying bytecode, etc. This is a huge projects that has taken a few weeks already and is not close to being finished yet :) But progress is still being made.

Also enjoyed making a TRiBot interface explorer and a lot of Scripters have used it. Right now I'm working on a Script Updater that updates field values using Reflection. The new values are parsed from JSON.

I'm also learning web oriented languages now such as HTML5, JavaScript and ASP.NET. Now that I'm learning those I can also increase the quality of my scripts. I've wrote a Java Servlet that returns the updated script values for my scripts:
http://pulsebot.org:8080/ScriptUpdater2/scripts?name=JJsHerblore
http://pulsebot.org:8080/ScriptUpdater2/scripts?name=all

Overall I just really enjoy learning more and more. But I usually start learning a new language to use it in one of my other projects.

Why do you code (or program)?, how did you get started, furthermore, how do you maintain motivation?

I started because my mom banned me from playing on mini-clip by putting a password on our comp when I was 9. I had to learn how to crack stuff so I started programming. Now I simply code out of interest/curiosity or boredom. I'm never really motivated. In fact, I don't exactly like coding lots because I get bored quickly. During projects, I maintain motivation because others push me or because I haven't had the satisfied feeling of going far enough or accomplishing something yet.

What is your favorite coding (or programming) language(s)? and why?

Both are tied for Assembly and C++. Because C++ was my first language and Assembly my second.

What project have you enjoyed writing (or participating in) the most?, what was so special about it?

None.

EDIT: I like my sudoku solver "most" because it made me think for a while.. Nothing special.

1- Why do you code (or program)?, how did you get started, furthermore, how do you maintain motivation?

More recently it has been an ends to a means, however I enjoy building large systems of inter-working parts. I started with wanting to make a game like runescape, so I learned QBasic and HTML, neither would would have actually helped me build RS, but it was a useful endeavor :). I maintain motivation several ways,
a. I try maintaining a fun+easy part of the project I'm making, and periodically work on that while the other boring things are getting built.
b. I try to get working code as fast as possible so the more boring parts are over sooner.
c. When a+b fail I play flash games for a tiny boost, and dive back in.

2- what is your favorite coding (or programming) language(s)? and why?

C++, and lua
c++ is my favorite language for many reasons, speed, level of controllability and large amount of libraries written for it. C++ is flexible enough to write a kernel, an OS, or a quick flash like game (flash is likely written in c++). The community is very large, and generally professional.

Lua is a fun language to hack around in, it is tiny, decently fast, really flexible and simple yet full of useful features.

Pascal is perhaps one of my least favorite languages, supposedly it is cross-platform, however I have yet to get a decently running Simba client in Linux. Also, pascal feels really old, I was shocked to find that a project was actually using pascal.

3- what project have you enjoyed writing (or participating in) the most?, what was so special about it?

Simba has been very fun :) love the community and people, almost makes up for the fact that Simba uses pascal :fiery:

1) For fun and the challenge. Started when I wanted to bot runescape and found this site. Motivated by always trying to make things better
2) Pascalscript since that is pretty much all I know… oops
3) Umm I'm not sure, maybe LRC? Or making a script run past a month?

1. I code for three reasons: learning, fun, and its my job. I started programming around the age of 9 when I started wondering how the games that I was playing were actually made. I strived to make my own game, and at the age of 10, I made my first 2d game in BASIC. I maintain my motivation by learning new things in programming every day. Most of the time, I learn these things at work, but often I purposely go out and learn something new. An example of this would be creating a came via Unity3D and C#. I would have to learn how the make the game using Unity3D . I would also have to get better at my 3d modeling and world creation. Then I could put it all together and come out with a great project!

2. My favorite programming language is C++ because of the limitless things you can achieve with it. I enjoy writing in it, and prefer it to C# and Java (both languages I also use almost on a daily basis). Pascal is cool, but I never really liked it (always hoped that Ian's posts would be read and a Simba++ would of been created). Oh, and I can not stand Python… Eww. I had to take a semester class using only that - worst class ever. xD

3. I enjoyed creating an advanced CAISO Outage Card Module. It was my first project in my current job and I learned so much from it.

@Brandon has some Simba++ done, we should definitely do work on it, I would contribute for sure :)

Is @BMWxi working on something similar?

Not that I'm aware of, but I'll tell you if I find out that I am later.

(I don't know any C++ so perhaps you're thinking of someone else ;))

ian./i luffs yew was an older member here. I think he posted a thread a few years back about making a c++ version of simba/scar instead of using ps (eww). now that i think about it more, maybe it was also brandon who advocated this (idk). either way, this was an older topic which never came to fruition sadly.

This is pretty much me nowadays.
1) I started because I wanted to make runescape scripts for myself and some to share with users of the forums. I enjoy scripting and consider it my main hobby :P
To this day my pascal knowledge expands from doing this and I hope to eventually branch out and learn other languages and possibly follow that career route.
2) only know pascalscript
3) Sadly what sjoe said :P
Honesty is the best policy :P (in a few cases atleast)

3- I like doing this divination script so far. The challenge of writing a script that so far nobody (other than brandon who wrote in OGL) has posted in SRL.
