Why Did My Dinner Plate Randomly Explode??

So I was sitting down this evening for my dinner (pizza), sounds pretty normal, huh?

Well after I finished eating and was sitting and staring into space…. my dinner plate randomly EXPLODED. I'm sitting there stunned and like, WTH JUST HAPPENED?

So I know that glass can explode if it's extremely cold and you put something extremely hot on it or vice versa, but both my dinner plate and pizza were at room temperature.. (or near it). So my question is, what happened?? I was just sitting there and the plate was on my table and nothing (except the table) was touching it at all when it happened lol.

Here's a pic of the aftermath:

It doesnt have to be extreme temps it can happen at some pretty small changes especially if it isnt real pyrex glass like (Soda glass)

Spontaneous Glass Breakage

Spontaneous glass breakage is a phenomenon by which toughened glass (or tempered) may spontaneously break without any apparent reason.

The most common causes are:

  • Minor damage during installation such as nicked or chipped edges which later develop into larger breaks
  • Binding of the glass in the frame causing stresses to develop as the glass expands and contracts due to thermal changes or deflects due to wind
  • Internal defects within the glass such as nickel sulfide inclusion.
  • Thermal stresses in the glass
  • Inadequate glass thickness to resist wind load

So the plate is glass? Or is it porcelain?

I would presume some sort of ceramic porcelain due to the fact that it is white… as well as… Ive never seen glass break that cleanly.

Im with nebula on this one claiming aliens.

But from a realistic stand point, what core posted is probably it. Ceramics slightly more ductile than glass, resulting in… basically less pieces everywhere. Id assume that somewhere along the line, the plate had gotten chipped or had a very small fracture through it. With everyday use, the fracture grew larger and larger until… bam. it broke. Id venture that your counter is less than flat and the plate was sitting on it in just the right way that there was enough torque on it to fail.

Dissecting this fracture down, it looks like it was previously damaged (the semi-circular part) and after placing it on your uneven countertop, the top and bottom (on photo) sides were forced up while the center was forced down (or vise versa).

The lesson here? Get a decent single piece countertop of granite… or atleast formica. Tile countertops are dated and very unsanitary.

So judging by the plate that I have and BMW has, the 3 of us must be of Dutch decent?
