Having just seen some pretty sweet GFX by @tehYosh (thread: http://villavu.com/forum/showthread.php?t=104858) I was reminded of SOTW (Signature Of The Week) which was running a few years back. It died out because fewer and fewer people took part, but I was thinking, with the new blood that's joined, that it'd be pretty cool if we could get it going again.

So…What do you guys think? Would you take part?

My heart melted when I saw that, I'm honoured that my work rekindled your idea! If anything I'd love to be a part of it or a helping hand if I can! Haha I've got butterflies in my stomach, kinda excited! :)

A SoTW competition is normally when a theme is decided for anyone to enter in (Normally with rules and stuff, but that's all decided by whoever runs it) in which there is normally a prize, whether it be bragging rights or just a small perk, but because it's a weekly thing it obviously rotates round, and new things and new challenges bring out the creative side of people :)

tehYosh pretty much summed it up. There were never prizes before but I suppose donations could be taken for prizes, and hopefully some more people would get involved.

With a community that's the whole idea isn't, all you need is one stone to get the ball rolling! I only suggested the prizes are more of an attraction thing, people feel more inclined to do something if there is a reward at the end, not sure but the following could be a possibility:

Attending SoTW Prize: 1m gp
Winning SoTW Prize: 2m gp + blue phat
Staff Favourite: 100k gp

Obviously not those prizes, but as a reward structure maybe?

@Rich this is a great idea! I'm not much for graphic design myself but I'd love to see what others have to offer! :D

Also I chose the "I'll take part" option because even if it's not great I might as well enter it, it's fun to play around with gimp :)

maybe it would be best to do it on a monthly basis? I think it will die out if its weekly since we don;t have that many people into gfx

If the majority of the people chip in for the fun of it (Which is obviously the main idea!) then there isn't any reason not to do it weekly, it's not an overly difficult process, but I guess getting the userbase, or getting an idea of who will actually do it before actually doing the competition was a smart idea, but I hope it brings up enough interest!

Fortnightly could be better I suppose?

Yeah, I also thought of SoTW when I saw @tehYosh's recent post. I'd be all for this, although I'm downright bad with them ;).

Sure why not? Although I'm far out-classed when it comes to graphics I'm all for more community events & competitions.

I would love to do something like this. I don't have great photoshop skills, but I do have photoshop…

Make a cup for anyone who wins 3 times!
Small gp rewards are always nice too, I donated a while back to the bank idk if what I donated is still available.

Id love to take part in this, I am honing my photoshop skills as we speak!

This is the whole idea though, it's not about if you're good or bad at photoshop, it's all about the community aspect and helping each other out, together as a unit, we can push through together, rather than one at a time :)

I'm also considering doing some tutorials just to give people some basic tips, also if anyone does want any help or feels stuck with anything I'm more than willing to share my creative insight with you!

I'll talk to Hobbit later on when I get in from work to see what we can sort out rewards wise. I think a title might e more appropriate than a cup TBH, perhaps something like GFX Master?

I sent Hobbit a message and am awaiting a reply :)

I've spoken to Hobbit. He said we could definitely do some sort of prize but there's only about 50m currently in the SRL prize fund, so the prizes won't be amazing but it'll be better than nothing. He's thinking about the idea of a title/cup/both, so won't start anything until everything is clear :)

People aren't really going to try for $10…

$10 is more attractive than $0. Like I said before, the prizes won't be amazing, but it'll be better than nothing.

You really can't get anything for free outside of the black market otherwise anyway and not everyone thinks of it as the cash value.

Not to mention that's closer to $20 atm than $10…

Also I think gold has more intrinsic value, and it's only that low due to mass bot farming.

Good news guys! Hobbit said he'll be willing to dish out some titles to repeat winners :D

Seems like a neat idea and some of the work will be great to look at. I look forward to keeping up with this, however because I am poor at best with graphics, I doubt I will be participating.

@Rich, I reckon people should send the host(s) their submissions directly and have the host(s) post them anonymously. This would get rid of pre conceived notions about who to vote for because of their fame on the site and what not.

No… A signature doesn't have to have a name on it. It can be something else such as text.

Good idea to be honest. Should make voting a lot fairer. :)
