What's keeping you from full members?

It's great that you are a Junior member and all, but we all know the big cheese is full membership. What is keeping you from achieving full members? What's your next step toward becoming a member? Hope we can get a quality discussion out of this and possibly help some people out on the way.

Well keep in mind my friend having a successful Membership application isn't only about the work submitted; attitude, helpfulness, and activity, hands down, play the biggest role in that. Learning enough to whip up advanced and complex scripts isn't nearly as important as being a positive part of the community. ;)

What Flight said is true. If you have a great attitude, are helpful around the forums and contribute, then your script isn't as important (we are more lenient). On the other hand, if you have an awesome script but we don't know who you are, or you have a bad attitude, then you probably wouldn't get SRL Membership. Even is your application isn't successful, we will give you feedback about how you can improve so you can get in next time. You have to be in to win ;)

More than one person has been turned away because they had, like, 10 posts total while having a really impressive script. And more than one has gotten in because of being really helpful and nice, despite having a rather bland script.

bob_dole

2013-07-15 05:51:23

I've personally seen this around the forums many times. If you have other strong areas the script isn't as important. I remember seeing one applicant who applied with a chicken killing script. While he was declined & asked to add maybe death-walking or something, the fact that a ~250 line chicken killing script with salt on top can earn him full membership shows that you do not need an advanced; or near advanced script to get accepted. I could imagine the low scripting requirements upsetting an author; knowing the applicant is extremely unlikely to contribute meaningful code - but that's another discussion.

The authors that release advanced/complex scripts usually have prior experience programming. Been programming since 12 and at around ages 8 to 13 you soak up information like a dehydrated sponge (depressing how slow learning is now at 19 compared to back then, and it only gets worse). Profited over $150,000 USD from coding websites/programs and it still took me a couple weeks to code a decent SRL script.

I didn't know just how much I learned from starting early until taking programming courses in school. Watching my peers struggle for four years & pay to copy off me shows how hard it is for beginners to learn. It is difficult but definitely possible. Your mind may be geared more toward rational/logic related stuff and it will pick up programming-type stuff easier than if your mind has other (and equally awesome) strengths. But the truth is you only fail if you give up.

Creating a script to complete a task is not difficult, the hard part is stabilizing, optimizing, and perfecting that script to be able to run flawlessly and for long periods of time. The script you apply with does not require any of these three things. (although it would be nice) However, if your goal is to release a script and be a well-known pro scriptwriter, that's when the hard work is required.

Quick Example: Make a script to cut down a tree. Easy, can be done in a few lines. Now stabilize, optimize, and perfect that same script to be able to run for three hours or more.

My advice on learning how to create an acceptable script is to first get down the very basics. Create a new script, include SRL libraries, and then use the function list to spend time browsing the included functions. When you see one that interests you, double click it and you will be taken to the code used in the function. Try to interpret the purpose of each line and mess around with the code until you understand it. What better way to learn coding than from the developers of SRL themselves?

I know people have certain styles of learning (auditory, visual, hands-on) that work best for them, but looking through the function list (or an entire working script) lets you learn several functions in a short period of time while exposing you to different scripting styles and real-world examples.

If you would like to watch me code/explain something through TeamViewer to help you learn, send me a PM and I will pencil you in.

I've been making alot of scripts for simple things i need done along the way on 07. Creating a simple cooking, firemaking, smithing script or whatever i need done i just make it. Even if i fail i'll retry until it works… that's the thrill of scripting for me; making a script work. I do not care about the SRL/Scripting standards because i don't know why i should get SRL Membership.

Maybe someone has any positive motivation on getting SRL membership?

I knew nothing about scripting at the beginning of this year, I was just a leecher. I started learning by fixing an outdated script I found on the forums. I fixed 1 of the compiling errors at a time until it would run, and then I started tweaking and rewriting things to make it better. Eventually this script had been completely rewritten and evolved into my planker ;)

I always assumed SRL members are required/expected to contribute to the development of the include, so in-time when the community leaders retire replacements can be easily obtained. That was my assumption, i guess i was wrong.

Personally i don't think i can script properly so is not for me in the first place, my biggest drawback is that am not any good with Math and have no prior programming experience and am a bit too old to start learning complex things as-well as some issues are ambiguous in scripting … & i really tired this but i just couldn't bring my self to care deep enough to maintain srl "scripting standards" i just don't care about amending this format at all.

Its also demotivating watching the same people app time and time again and getting declined repeatedly.. I know its for their own good, but still its demotivating watching their topics get archived in the active topics viewer at the bottom of the forums :-).

Thats just my detailed take on it, took me a while to gather up and think of reasons that deter me from applying to SRL membership, i do know its a matter of persistence though.

Once i figure out how To pin-Point an object with many similar colors (the gate at Jaitzso, the bones in the fourth floor in stronghold) i'll probably try to make a run for SRL membership, but i haven't been able to do so for months now.

AFAIK, anyone can contribute to the SRL include aslong as it's legit, but don't take my word on this… This was my assumption :).

My script was quite dodgy when I applied, but through my application I removed severe errors (memory leak…) and released it. I'm guessing my attitude and contributions prior to applying carried me through. SRL Member is a community rank above all and without being involved in the community, you don't have much of a chance.

Hm. Just noticed that I am a Junior Member. Not sure at this point what that means or how I got here. :)

I haven't applied for full membership for several reasons:
  1. I don't have a script to submit for the app, though I am working on one now.
  2. Though I've done work with several scripting languages, I don't understand Pascal Script enough to make any significant contributions to the community outside of asking questions that have already been asked. That is why I've not posted more.
  3. I've made some comments on things I've noticed need to some updating, specifically concerning logging procedures and graphics settings. I am working on suggested tweaks, but I'm not certain they would actually be helpful or just look like noob comments.
All-in-all, I'd say I haven't applied simply out of a lack of confidence in my own contributions and a completed script.

I only know how to use DTMs, OGL and other basic functions such as text and simple color, yet I can make any type of script I want. Just practice with functions you like and with time, you will be able to use them easily. Try to find your own scripting style.

Heyy denart5,

Someone gave you some good advices then, because TPAs & ATPAs is where the fun part of scripting really begins!
Trust me, you'll be very happy when you learn to use em, because [A]TPAs do add great amount of flexibility to your scripts.. :)

Yes, they look complicated for most of us before we actually learn the way they work.
Just: Research, research, research… => Until you get the logical part of TPAs down, that's when you get used to em and they feel "normal" to you in your scripting projects.

I guess its lack of desire and not enough time to re learn scripting and make one myself. Hopefully I get around to it this summer, but we shall see. Used to be able to script but that was back when I was super active. Hopefully I pick back up on it quickly and can effectively do it.

I rarely vote on how good the script looks, I always vote one 3 things. Activity, attitude, and length of being a member of the forums, then if all three of those things are a go I will take a glance at the script (as long as there are no huge red flags like every method coming from ashmans script or static clicking etc.) I will vote yes!

I'm not involved in RS anymore so that's a large number of scripts/script ideas out of the window for me. I don't have a real use for the applications of a Simba script outside of RS, most of what I've done is just messing about.

I was thinking of applying with a script which completes Pokémon Blue for you, it's still largely unfinished and it only manages to get out of Pallet Town at the moment. I'd also like it to be able to implement some sort of global walking feature for it but I haven't got round to it. At the moment it just finds a unique DTM to the area it is in and moves relative to that DTM before finding another unique DTM to move relative to until it reaches the destination.

Other than that, I don't feel like I need to be a full member to enjoy the community.

I came to SRL without any programming know-how.

I just have to say, after you attain SRL, you shouldn't be done. Always strive to the next best thing, even if it's on another website, ect.

I thought I'd be done scripting/programming after I got SRL status, (Well, I guess I did quit scripting. :3), but as for programming, it causes you to learn more.

TL;DR
Don't just strive for SRL Member, there's many more opportunities out there. Set your goals high and your sights higher.
