Do you think it's safe to use VB.NET as a indentifier tool for Old School RuneScape?

I got a pretty nifty idea.

Using VB.NET to identify for example total level and skill experience and then calculate the estimate time until you level up.
I know this have been done before in scripting but since i frankly don't trust any kind of scripting that involves "hijacking" the Java Client.

The idea goes as follows(remember i haven't done my research on this one so it's only in-theory for now).

I make a image recognition software that calculates the pixels in each location of where the values are and count them to find the opposing value and then convert the image to an integer then i later display to a label which will show for example "Woodcutting EXP: 10123/12013".

Though the player would need to hover over the skill that they want to get the values which i think is much better than calculating themselves.

What do you think, is it do-able or do i have to do some research ?
Remember this can actually change the way people play OSRS.

Thanks for reading.

Uhh… doesn't it just load your default browser inside of the vb application? Therfor not un-safe

I use the webbrowser control to launch the game, so i wouldn't worry about that.

Simba already does this :l You can use Simba without Smart so yeah it does use Image Recognition for finding text. There's no reason to be scared of Smart or Java bots hijacking the client unless it's doing it badly.

Though, I'd say go for it but in VB? Not so sure since I hate VB :l It'll take a bit of research I guess. Not too much.

Which is IE. Aka Internet Explorer Browser Control so yeah you won't get a ban or anything.

I'm a little paranoid of Simba hehe.
But overall VB.NET isn't such an awful programming language, it get's the job done faster but not as accurate as it would be if i programmed it in C++ or Java.

But i like VB.NET better.

Thanks for the response :)

If you're paranoid of SIMBA, you can read the code and compile it yourself to make sure of any level of safety - that's the beauty of an open-source project and community! :)

I would rather code it in VB.NET since my RuneScape Helper is coded in VB.NET.

And lose out on our libraries, systems, and existing helpers? In the end it's your decision, but in some cases, it's easier to learn a new language/API than write your own :p

I registered on this forum do avoid scripting that includes editing the client, i only do coding that's outside the client.
Lower risk of getting banned.

Exactly, Simba does not edit the client in anyway shape or form.

Because i don't know the syntax that's why, and i doubt i will ever sit down and read tutorials and experiment with Simba even as you guys say it's a good scripting language it's just not my thing :).

Simba can be attached to a normal browser window (which isn't editing anything in any manner) and the SMART window you typically see is actually the legitimate Runescape official app with an additional canvas over it. That canvas has not been edited at all, there is simply some extra logic that reads the pixels occurring there (similar to a alt+printscreen) and instantiates a copy of your mouse on the mini SMART canvas.

None of that in any manner changes the base client or breaks the official Jagex ToS in any manner at all.

I didn't know that o.O.

But one problem still applies how do i get Simba and VB.NET to communicate with each other ?

Currently? There isn't a way. But Simba is written to be a plugin based language, so you could write some VB.NET plugins if you desired that SIMBA could read.

I've already done a lot of work on the RS helper and i have no plans changing programming languages any time soon.

Plugins are written in the native language (ie: VB.NET in your case) and compiled into a .dll plugin format.
Also, if you wanted your entirely own system in VB.NET, SMART is something you can implement anywhere as it was written to be language independent.

Also, I do not mean to discount any of your work by any means, but VB.NET is a pretty inefficient language. It's worse-off for much of this activity, especially as you will reach more advance functions, than even PascalScript. If you wish to stay fairly similar, you could make a jump to another .NET language such as C# instead. They all share the .NET framework, which means most of your current .NET based calls would be the same.

I did use C# a few years back but it was just to test it out.
But i understand what you say, since i am a mainly game developer i should move to a more "Powerful" Programing language like C# like you pointed out.

But i have to think about it(Don't trust myself when i haven't slept in over 24 hours ;) )

Thanks for your input :)
