Gun Control Debate

I'm interested in hearing peoples' opinions on the topic of gun control, based upon facts, statistics, and evidence, not just feelings. I personally believe we should be able to own guns; if only to maintain our freedoms given to U.S. citizens in our constitution. (I'm from the U.S.) I'd like to hear your views, SRL.

I agree with you since if we don't have guns, only the criminals will. But I also do think there needs to be more regulation put onto guns. Especially assualt weapons since legally obtained assualt weapons have been used in most mass shootings in the US.

I personally think guns don't kill people but people kill people. If a person is going to kill, whether it be one person or a mass of people, they WILL get the means to do it whether gun control laws were tougher or not. Even if guns were made illegal it would not solve anything. It would just give criminals another thing they can sell on the streets. Drugs are illegal, yet people still have access to them.
You can even make bombs with simple accessible ingredients. We've been killing each other since the beginning of time, and it wont stop anytime soon, tougher laws or not.

It has been illegal to buy Assault Weapons since 1986. The term "Assault Weapon" is used today as a politically charged term for semi-automatic AR15 rifles.

governments have made drugs, certain guns and all kinds of things, etc, etc illegal.
making things illegal to possess will not make them dissappear for good. black market, cartels will all love to start smuggling something else to make hundreds of millions off of. just threw this together quick

There's nothing wrong with owning guns, but when you can buy assault rifles over the counter, there is a problem.
Why don't you crazy americans just make it so that anyone can (as it is right now) buy small arms and such, but require special circumstances to get those things people use for massacres?

I believe we already have background checks on any gun purchases. (Also, it has been illegal to buy an assault weapon since 1986 in the U.S.)

Background checks are currently only mandatory if you buy a gun at a licensed dealer. Private gun sales or sales at gun shows ect do not need background checks.

There should be gun control. However, on which guns? Assul riffles and those higher grade weapons that have capabilities to kill and injure at an extremely fast and devastating rate. I have nothing against "regular" weapons.
Banning something won't stop the use of it. That's all that needs to be said.

In the U.S. ( I do not know about other countries) it has been
Illegal to buy
assault weapons since
1986. The term used today is a politically charged term used to sway people against firearms.

You know… I think that making the rules a bit more tough might be a good idea, but the thing that you need more than gun control is idiot control.. XP

I agree with the right to own a gun etc. But I mean the right to own A gun not an entire arsenal of semi-automatics, assault rifles etc.
I remember that when I heard the news about the shooting in Newtown (26 children killed by the caretakers son), it was said that the lady had 4 guns registered to her. 4 FIREARMS + A DAYCARE WORKER??? WTF?? Plus, she had a son with antisocial behaviour. Now, if I were a government official lookig at this on paper, I'd get really suspicious and perhaps at least check on the family to see who is actually using the weapons, why were the weapons obtained + how are they stored. And really, 4 guns is a bit too much for one person imo. U only have 2 hands after all…
To sum it up, the background check must become more strict and assault rifles / semi-automatics etc. should not be available for the civilian population.

It doesn't matter that she was a daycare worker and had 4 guns. Really the question is why weren't the guns locked up in a gun safe so that her crazy kid couldn't get to them?
More guns = bad
Less guns = bad
It really depends on the area and the neighboring areas (and by areas I ofc mean the people in the areas)

why is this post marked as spam? it's on topic and genuine…wut? :L
Guns are an important means of self defense, even as a use of intimidation. Having guns be so readily available is what makes them so dangerous. If there were more restrictions placed on registration and licenses this would be alot less of an issue, unfortunately those laws and regulations are often overlooked or glanced over.

Many americans are quite idiotic (don't take offence, it's only a word) the american government has many examples to choose from of other countries who have brought in mandatory checks, much stricter licenses, and callbacks, etc yet rather than looking at these they're relying on people from the NRA or whatever they're called and others stupid ides that it will make matters worse and that they wont be able to defend themselves against criminals and such.. What do you think the police are for? If the american government and americans in general would take a note from australia and the strict gun laws that were brought in in 1996 they'd realise that it actually does help.. Since the strict laws were brought in not one single mass murder has occurred. Yet in the few years before they were brought in there were multiple mass murders. Americans don't like change, majority of the world doesn't like change, but when change results in saving innocent lives, then change needs to be made…
I'm failing english so alot of what i said might not make any sense, i'll try find a good video i saw last week on the matter when i get home.

Ofcourse it wont but it will lessen the use and availability to idiotic and mentally impaired people. Whatabout ice, coke, heroin, etc? May aswell un-ban them aswell cause it obviously doesnt stop people using them…

Yes we should un-ban them, the only people benefiting from them are violent drug cartels making millions off of them, and because they are illegal they are expensive.

You're kidding me right? You think meth and sh*t should be legal? Weed is the only drug out of the lot that should be legalised, and MAYBE x, but meth, heroin and shit are just overly addictive and f**k you up. I have a cousin who's a ice addict, she was going to give me a puff one day then changed her myne and said no cause she knows that it's addictive and she doesn't want to ruin my life…

Yup, and the federal government is wasting money keeping here in and out of jail. It's not like sending her to jail is stopping her.

I'm certain that we do need improved gun control laws. My main argument is that family members or acquaintances suffer from firearms kept in families much more often than intruders. Guns which are meant for self-defense are used for whatever, but not self-defense. Houses owning guns have 3 times higher risks of homicides and suicides in the family, compared to families which have no guns.
