Bitcoin mining

So I decided to get into mining, and quickly realized my Nvida GPU wasn't working too well…

So I was thinking of buying:https://products.butterflylabs.com/homepage/5-gh-s-bitcoin-miner.html
as soon as my refund from newegg gets cleared.

Worth it?

how long will it take to get 1 bitcoin with that thing going 24/7?

Seems alright for that price

Isn't the mining thing like a random lottery?

Such as if your computer finds the solution to a block first, you will get to x amount of coins, its not predictable.

I'm pretty sure generating bitcoins now are harder than ever because of all the media attention it's received in the past few months, which made gpu's obsolete.

I'd mine in a pool, so I'd always get some back. ;)

It's not worth buying any hardware just to mine, but you can do it as a background task for some small profit. You would earn more working minimum wage tough.

its not worth it its a scam , i think ther can only be total of 25 million bit coins, but when it went public it was already at 6 million so guess whose making all the money, and its harder to get coins now ( exponential terms ) . Plus ur wasting earths precious energy

I don't know what all these player haters are on about, bitcoin mining, especially with designated ASIC hardware (butterflylabs or what not) can definitely be profitable, and considering the value of bitcoin has tripled in the past month or so, definitely worthwhile. Now, I'll just let you know NKN, I had a pre-order with butterflylabs for the Jalapeno since like…August last year. I canceled my order end of December because they constantly kept pushing the release date back. Ok apparently they are shipping them now…wow finally. One thing to consider (although I assume you don't pay for your electricity) is that it does constantly need electricity AND a computer to be on at all times.
If I were you, I'd get one. They are nice also when you are in a dorm or apartment and electricity is covered ;)

"Working" with @Dgby714 to build a ACIS miner. He doesn't think I can do it, so it's moral support bby.

I should infract you for that…

And I didn't say you couldn't do it. I said it's unlikely you will do it given your knowledge and age.

I should have bought me some bitcoins when I seen them at $60 a while back. Price is riding around ~$133 right now. Bitcoin mining seems like it could be quite profitable right now with the right hardware.

Way to late to buy a miner from Butterfly labs. You will be placed on the end of a line of preorders that has been accumulated over about 9 months. Here is a decent calculator. Be away that the difficulty will skyrocket when more ASICs are shipped to the public. http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/

As for mining with your GPU I would recommend checking out Litecoin mining. It is more profitable since there aren't and ASICs yet. You could also mine a different cryptocurrency if you don't like Litecoin.
