(CNN) – A university police officer has died after being shot on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus in Cambridge late Thursday, according to state police.

Police and the FBI responded to reports of gunshots at Building 32, according to MIT, which posted a message on its Twitter account. Officers surrounded and cordoned off the building.

The university, which lies adjacent to the city of Boston, requested people stay away from the building as police consider the situation still active and dangerous.

Students and faculty received e-mails to alert them to the event, CNN affiliate WCVB reported.

Residents in the area have been on edge after two bombs ripped through the crowd near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring about 180 others.

Would this week just end already?

Edit: One of the bombers/shooters is dead, the other is still on the run:

Police urged everyone to stay inside of their homes. The area was considered extremely dangerous.

The SWAT team, Cambridge, Boston and Watertown Police along with Homeland Security and the ATF all rushed to the area.

SLIDESHOW: Photos from the area

According to Sean Kelly, police were searching the area with guns drawn.

The suspects are reportedly connected to a carjacking that took place in the Cambridge area.

It was not immediately clear if the incident was related to the fatal shooting of an MIT campus police officer or was in any way related to Monday's deadly Boston Marathon bombing.

No additional information was immediately available.

EDIT: Was listening to live news feed on it… According to it, the MIT shooting is linked to this event.

I live in Northern Europe and it looks like a civil war to me from here :/ .
Also, I read that the Congress didnt approve stricter measures like background check for gun owners/buyers - wtf?? The country is getting shot up by its own residents and the only ppl with the power to do sth about it just sit on their asses or take it deep from gun companies? I mean c'mon, just the background check would have saved the 26 lives that were lost in the Connecticut shooting (A daycare lady who buys a collection of guns - lmao).

This is just sad. Especially since the bill that could potentially make gun control more well controlled was shot down.

I've updated the OP with a new article link. One of the bombers was killed by police, while the other is still on the run. Another police officer was shot, but is still alive although his condition is not known.
