Hello everyone,

I was browsing around the forums a bit today and I stumbled across more stuff about runescape private servers. Now, i have read about them before, but i have very little knowledge about them.

I was wondering if there are any people here who would like to explain what they are, how they work, why there are there and if it is at all possible to join any.

Please let me know!

THanks!

Pretty much a runescape private server is a rip off of different time periods of Runescape. They are generally more buggy and have very little content. Here is the hub of private servers were you can find sources and clients: http://www.moparscape.org/smf/index.php
You can pretty much host your own version of Runescape

Pros -

-Fun to play around with (hosting your own, making your own content, custom NPC's and objects learning how the game works) For example I created a bootleg Zaros GWD in like 2011. I took a black unicorn, made it hit harder, changed it's name to "saturn", changed its level to "139", then took the chaos elemental, renamed it Zaros, ajusted hits, used a couple other NPC's (forgot which ones) and then put them all inside a dungeon. "Zaros" dropped a zaros hilt which was a rotated ancient staff sprite cut in half, which could be combined to make a "zaros" godsword which was a Zamorak godsword with the name changed.

-Fun to play(if your poor on RS)
-Can play previous versions of Runescape
-Different custom content then RS
-No bot detection
-Generally more responsive staff
-Good place to start out making simba scripts (I did this for a while)

Cons:

-Corrupt staff
-Duping/major in-game glitches
-Can be easily hacked if it does not contain the proper failsafes (abunch of packet stuff) http://www.moparscape.org/smf/index.php?topic=551310.0 (I have full on spawned items on a VERY bad server I have a vid of it I can upload if you want)
-Unpopular ones may contain virus's (this is actually rare..)
-some are Laggy
-Generally bad in-game economy - most servers run off "donations" when someone donates they get in-game items causing a inflated economy
-You can get your computer memory raped if you don't use a server with anti-syi (or else someone will use allgofree bot makes like 1000 player accounts in like .5 seconds each player account is like 23 kb)
-You can get your computer infected hosting a server from your home computer also.

I have very little experience playing on private servers, but I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Basically, they are versions of the game that have been modified and rehosted on other sites.

Your character/login will not work for them because they are not physically linked with the actual game. Entering your runescape details into a private server may result in your account being "hacked" because it would be just like entering your details into a phishing site.

If you want to play on a private server, you register a new account on the private server. I recommend using a different username and password than your real runescape account.

They are there because there are a group of people who whish to play a version of runescape other than the one offered by Jagex. Many have inflated xp rates or item spawning. There are a large amount of ones based around PK'ing. "oldschool" private servers were quite popular before Jagex released an official oldschool runescape, and their popularity was one of the driving forces behind Jagex releasing OSRS.

To join one I recommend asking other people that you trust which ones they play on. You'll be able to register on the website.

One huge risk of using a private server is that every time you load the game you could be exposing yourself to RATs. You know Java driveby's where if you click "allow Java" it will download a RAT onto your computer that can steal your personal information? This is the same thing, so only click "allow" if you trust the person hosting the website.

If anybody else who knows more about private servers notices that I made a mistake, feel free to correct me :)

Entering in runescape details isn't much of a big deal when you play servers anymore with 50-100+ people on at a time, big ones like Soulsplit have hundreds of thousands of accounts made I doubt they are sifting through looking for working RS usernames and passwords

Ones like soulsplit probably aren't, but if Jagex takes down a private server the owners have all the information and little to lose, so it's good practice to use different passwords. It wouldn't take long to have a program like Simba enter account details from a list and report back which ones worked.
