I love the tuts and the community… but when it comes down to the scripting I feel like I could get farthur with java. Ofc the communities wouldnt be as helpful. Ive been trying to walk a long distance in pascal with radial walk. I just cant do it with pascal I dont think. >.< any helpful ideas or suggestions?

Try some different walking methods?

-DTM
-TPA
-SPS (if on EoC)

Programming is all similar no matter what language you use, if you get really good as pascal, you will be able to pick java up very easily later, it's totally upto you ;)

Thanks. Ill try learning both, as I cant help but get frustrated at the debugging process that comes with radial walking! Ill try Dtms. thanks man.

This. Pascal is GREAT for learning, its a great place to start. If you wish to jump straight into things like java its up to you, but you often find that people start with VB or Pascal.

Obviously there are differences between the languages, but like the guys have already said, Pascal is a great way to start learning. I found C++ fairly easy to get to grips with when I got involved with that, and that's because I already knew the basic principals of coding. Pascal is most definitely not useless, that's for sure.

I'd rather Java then Pascal, more usage in the long run.

Your thinking is wrong or your saying it wrong either way programming walking with java or pascal is pretty much the same process you would still have to create your own method in either language but I guess you mean pbot api rather than java as there tile based walking is great very easy to use just like marpis's sps.

About pascal being worth it
yes by far like mentioned you will gain a lot of experience in the programming environment making it easier for you to adapt to other languages or combine them both like creating plugins for simba
Is well worth diving into pascal very very clean language easy to understand and get to grips with.

sorry to jump on your thread ….

realistically how long would pascal take to learn to a decent standard (for example simple scripts for simba) for someone with intermediate/advanced Java, and Objective-C experience?

just trying to decide whether it is worth it or not for me :)

Not long at all but IMO, since you already know Java, Pascal for you is redundant really.. The only time I ever used pascal at all is for Simba scripts. No where else have I ever seen it being used (except for where Dbgy pointed out on Github last time). You could pretty much say its a dead language or a language barely holding on against the modern day languages.

Asking if Pascal is worth it on SRL/Villavu/Scar, will always give you a "yes" or something of the sort. Primarily because everyone here uses it or at least for scripting (Pascal-Script.. almost the exact same as Pascal.. only some things missing).

If you plan to script, just learn it in your spare time.. Probably will take you a couple hours to get the grasp of it and a couple days to get fairly good. Pay attention to formatting, indentation and yeah..

Going from Java and especially Obj-C to pascal is extremely easy. I'd say OBJ-C is way harder than Pascal! Though not similar, the transition is a singe.

Though, I have to mention that Dbgy has some pretty good arguments why Pascal/Pascal-Script is useful/still used. My opinion still differs ;)

The longest part, I think, would be the learning of what SRL can do for you. There's so many different procedure and functions, you might end up pretty much rewriting them in a script if you didn't know they existed.

thanks guys, i have just read through a nice long beginners tutorial and found it fairly trivial. i plan on giving it a go in my spare time as suggested, i hope that with the sheer number of tutorials out there i should be able to create a decent script relatively soon. already have a nice one in mind so keep your eyes peeled :p

I think Pascal makes more sense than Java just formatting wise, although I'm sure those who know Java will disagree with me on that ;)
