Views On Farming Gold

I was wondering what the community's opinions were on farming gold. I personally believe it's okay if the gold is being farmed solely for the advancement of your character (I'm farming nature runes so I can afford the buyables for my main). How does SRL feel about farming gold for real world currency?

Personally I dont agree with gold farming directly. If you are farming mats, they should be used to train YOUR skills, not just to increase your pocket change.

Farm the materials you need. For example, running a nat crafting script is good if you are going to use the nats in conjunction with a high alch or super heating script. If you are going to just sell the nats and buy herbs/gear then it drives the nat market down and inflates the herb market for legit players.

One method for making gold that wont adversely affect the market is: Wood Cutting script + Fletching script + Nature crafter + High alch. Buying the bow strings and pure ess is cheap and boosts income for new players. This method wont make you 20 mil a day, but it has almost zero economic impact and gives you xp in multiple skills.

Yay. My 69th post.

My opinion is kinda neutral about it. Btw what is considered gold farming? Is it gold farming if you make money from duel arena because you are not generating any money to the game?

I agree with this.
Goldfarming doesn't even mean botting it can just be some Chinese or whatever guy doing kiln runs for $$$ (what's with the Chinese goldfarmer hate anyway - i bet there's hardly any of them on Runescape anyway and it's all just sad little kids who still live with their parents)

Honestly, don't blame the farmer if you don't like it and ask yourself this:
Do I consider the value of virtual meaningless 'gold coins' to have a real life value?
Most of you that play this game will probably answer with a yes and even if no deep down you know you're a sad little kid who still plays Runescape and the answer is yes.
Don't blame the farmer, blame yourself.

No offence villavu.

Personally, I consider gold farming doing anything to gain large quantities of in game currency/currency equivalent with the intent to sell for real world money. But that's just me.

I hate the gold farming bots, I hate the whole bot thing being abused. But then, to stop my son wasting months/years of his childhood clicking the same spot over and over again for just a few RSG in order to buy even the most basic of 'nice' stuff to enjoy the content more, I purchased him RSG use RWM, and he gets to spend more time outside with his real friends.
So I guess it's a case of hating something…..until you need to use it, then it's okay. Then I'll go back to hating it when I don't need it any more!

I really don't care. I prefere people that don't go over too many accounts and try to use methods that don't affect other users (e.g. fishing over woodcutting.)
but other than that I don't care…
The SRL objective is to blend in however, so 50 accounts doing the same thing on the same thing isn't exactly "blending in".

Ok. I was just wondering if gold farming means the act of producing gold in a game and then selling it –> ruining the in-game economy for legit players. With staking this doesn't really happen because you're not producing any in-game currency or items.

If they are making real money from the gold I think it is wrong, but if they are making real money through one account (I did this for a while through my merchanting, I think it is gray area)

If it ruins the game for other people I believe we shouldn't do it

This pretty much sums if up for me.

If you're running swarms of yew or coal bots, that just ruins the experience for any legit player trying to make some money because they can't compete for resources. If it's obvious that you're a bot too that's just salt in the wound, it's one thing competing for ore with another player but it sucks to be constantly beaten to the ore by a bot.

Short and simple -

Pro - Makes materials cheaper and easier to buy. They also sort of shield us casual botters from Jagex.

Cons - Ruins the point in training some skills, and ruins the highscores :(

If you goldfarm on a script you personally made, it's okay because its your efford that was taken to make the script..It's goldfarming but in a legit way, in other words, not leeching..

Too my knowledge, I thought GF was just hording GP to sell later? Or Items to sell for GP to sell off for IRL money?
Is that much too different then people selling their accounts or their rares?

I actually don't see it affecting the in game economy that much :p

Idk though, maybe times change? Haven't played in a couple months.

I always thought goldfarming meant swapping real life money with Video game currency.
So in essence if that does happen and it isn't sponsored by the designers of the game or monitored by an authority it could lead to a lot of bad things, i.e sweat-shops, violence between people and possibly murder (it has happened in the past, and will happen again), credit fraud and more evil deeds..

Am totally against it, weather its Sponsored and monetized by the game company or run as an underground blackmarket by secret communities.

personally i bought membership with RSgp in the past, when i was younger, the first time i got membership i did it with PaybyCash, then i bought it with RSGP for a while, and after i got scammed i just took my moms credit card and used it till i got old enough to get my own credit card and never needed to depend on anyone anymore.

So am pretty much against it even though i did it.

However i do have problems with greedy people that ruin the game for everyone by running 10+ bots 24/7

Banning Gold farming IMO is just another way for the man to keep us down!

Ok on a serious note, Gold Farming ruins the economy of the game and ruins the game for people who are trying to play. Yes it helps us by shielding us from Jagex but really at what cost. I mean when i was trying to level up my character using my script, there were so many bots that it was ridiculous. I mean of course I made my script super fast and not human like but at the same time its a pain in the ass to deal with so many bots at the same time.

Gold farmers uses a lot of bots and it ruins the gold economy. Like for example in EOC.
And now try to observe in RS07, when recently the gold prices are beginning to get low.

At what point does, using parts of other peoples scripts, become not leeching?

I have invested many hours into a personal woodcutting script, at first I completely used another person's script. "Definition of leeching" I then started editing their script more and more with bits and pieces of other peoples scripts. So midway through I had this bastard of a script that was getting very messy, buggy and hard to work with. I then went through many phases completely re-writing the script from scratch, using the previous script as an outline. After a good couple weeks working with this script, I feel I can comfortably say it's all mine, or I have the supporting knowledge to write what they have already written. I now also have the knowledge to write other basic scripts dew to my efforts, and spot useful parts of other scripts that would help mine. Exmp. The declare players function, someone had to come up with that, but everyone uses it in their script. There is many ways to make a proggy function, but there are some basic ones that most people use/borrow and edit from others.

Sorry for being a bit off topic,
Thank you for your replies!

Indeed it would lead to scamming but whats the point of them farming gold if they will just scam?
I believe that, the people who bought gold to a gold farmer will be risky due to most of them are using bot. And in terms of buying gold using IRL cash/real money, I would prefer to use a safe exchange platform like Playerauctions to avoid those. So basically scam in buying gold can be easily avoid.

based on experience you will get the urge of getting back your subscription fee using bot.

I don't mind botting on skills where there is little to no competition (woodcutting Ivy, mining LRC, ect) but when bots come and ruin a place like green dragons, blue dragons, black dragons, ect and I can't kill them for a slayer task, then I don't approve.

I didn't include the actual botter armies, I meant that for every one player, they usually have one account (Irregardless if they bot or not). If 50% of the players on RS had botting armies then gold would be $0.01 per mil.
